My first car, a granma 2bbl 283 powerglide '67 Chevelle. I bought it in 1978.

I eventully put a 4speed and a 12 bolt and built a 301 SB for it. Sold it for $2000.

Kid that bought it put it on it's top, a month later.

'68 fastback w/351W & toploader...that engine (well, at least the crank & block - now stroked) is still in one of my cars (been in several over the years) - and this pic is Aug '82 right after I brought it home three weeks before my 16th B-day. Had been working for 3 years saving every penny. Had it for about 2-1/2 yrs before I was T-boned by some old lady. By then, it was a solid 13.3 sec car. Parted what I could & got a '51 F1 Panel Truck next...and so the sickness began

I wish I had pics of my first car. It was '47 Merc coupe. All stock except dark green metallic paint and black 'hyde seats. That was around 1969. I traded it for a 1942 Harley 45 and $100. Seemed like a good deal at the time.

For those of you just tuning in, I got my 49 GMC when I was 13 and had it driving by 17 and painted, plated, and upholstered by the time I was 18.

Now, 19 years later, with the exception of the wheels and tires, it still looks about the same...

You got me beat. Very nice ride let alone a first ride.

Jeez, some of you guys had nicer cars at 16 than I've had in my whole damned life!

My 1st car was such a shitpile it would have been a waste of film to photograph it. 77 Firebird with a v6, and so eaten up by the salt (it was from Cleveland, Ohio) that you could kick the quarter panel and about a half pound of rusted metal would fall off.

Here is mine. I bought the 57 Ford in 1966 from my brother for $150. 312 - Auto. I found a T-Bird 2x4 manifold and carbs for it. The 50 Mercury I bought in 1969. It was a one family owner with 46,000 actual miles and came with Skirts and a Fulton sun visor. I bought it for $200 and sold it for a whopping $800 out of Hemmings in 1972 - included were a set of headers, an Isky Jr 400 cam, an Offy 4 barrel manifold, and a set of Offy heads - I still have the Hemmings.

Believe it or not the hat is still with me and it still fits! One of those good time wool ones. It's a little grungier but still works.
VINTAGE PANTS indeed!I'd be lucky to get ONE leg into them today! That was back in the days when I lived on Pall Malls(they only made the red packs then),Wild Turkey,Boones Farm Apple wine, and Dunkin' Donuts coffee to bring it all back together after partaking of the first three items.Maybe a little 5 Star Metaxa in a water pipe and after a few bowls you drink the Metaxa.Guaranteed to fog your mind.I better stop now;my kids might be reading this.......

This is my first, bought it when I was 14, dad and I biult it as a father son project, drove it for the first time at 16, and did a ltttle to it every year. Been in several mags over the years and around the world twice! That black paint has been on it since 1988. Still looks pretty much the same, just a few added rock chips and scratches. Full dress flathead, etc. I gave it to my son the day he was born, he is 5 now, so I guess this counts as 2 hot rodders first rides!!!!

1968 GTO bought in 1978 with 269000 miles. Engine burned oil real bad, even got a fix it ticket because of the smoke. Rebuilt the engine and transmission and had some body work done and re-painted. Car still has original interior which needs re-done. I still have it, this is what it looks like today. I don't have a scanner to show you before pictures, which aren't worth looking at any way.

My sister had a 64 'vair in '66 when I took my first driver's license test...I used it because it was so small and easy to handle that it made parallel parking a breeze. And since it was only 2 years old it was still running...lol.

I don't have any pics of my first two cars. My first was a 51 Chevy foordoor deluxe I bought when I was 14. I traded it to my brother when I turned 16 for a swangin 64 Chevy biscayne(emerald green, shaved handles, supremes, hydraulics, crush velvet interior, etc.) that I drove my junior year in highschool. After I blew the 283 up the summer before my senior year I purchased the car of my dreams and have had it ever since. Its a 49 Chevy 2door fastback. Here is a shot of it in my highschool parking lot my senior year.

I don't have any pics of my first car... a '67 Mustang Coupe A-Code (289 2bbl), dark blue metallic. I put on an edelbrock manifold with a holley 650, headers with glass packs. Air shocks to lift the back end and of course, slotted mags. A styling ride in the late 70s.

My first car was a 1968 Holden Monaro GTS.That was in 1971.
Lost all the pics and just recently found a pic right here
on the HAMB of one exactly the same as what i had.
Then i decided to try a sports car so i bought a little
Honda S800 coupe .The ones with 4 cylinders, 4 carbs and
twin chains to the rear wheels. That would rev to 13000. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I also had a 67 Mustang. 289 Hypo engine with a circle track Holley 600. Had longer shackles on it to accomodate the N50x15s on the back. Had truck recaps on the front that came apart at 90! Was a fine car, 'til I rearended a rubbernecker stopping in the intersection on a rainy day.

Well... I got my first old car at the ripe age of 17. That was back in 1997. I had no interest whatsoever in cars until I got my drivers licsense and my Aunt Mary's beat-to-shit '84 Riviera. About two days later, I decided that cars were the coolest thing ever and it's been downhill since.

First project: '65 Triumph Spitfire. $300 inital, about $500 more and A LOT of time.

OK, now that we are on page4, and nobody is looking anymore, I think I can bore you with mine...
When I was 10 years old my dad gave me a '52 VW floorpan, we parked it behind his shop, and he said " here kid, learn something..."
So I started planning and dreaming.
My first plan was to put a Mini body on it, so we shortened it to that wheelbase.
Progress was real slow because I was a kid that was only learning, no money, and I was only there every other weekend. ( but that car was on my mind every day of the week.)
By age 13 or so I had decided that the Mini body was not the way to go, And I was drawing sketches to build my own body.
I wanted it to be a low 2 seater , but at 13 I did not know how tall I was going to be, so I left a little extra space ( it was still only about 45" to the top of the roof).
I was going to use Fibreglass panels I bought used at a junkyard where they parted out Busses.
I worked on that thing till I was about 19, By that time the energy crises had happened, and gas had gotten real expensive in Holland.
I had already gotten rid of my first daily driver ( a Morris 1100 ) because I could not afford to keep gas in it, and I was starting to really enjoy the Fiat 500 that replaced it.
After another year or so I decided there was no way I would be able to afford to drive the homebuilt any time soon, so I parted it out and sold the pieces.
I had gotten as far as a good mockup on the thing, and I think I could recreate it in about a month to 6 weeks, if I started today...
Maybe it sounds like a failed project, but to me it was not.
I did lean a lot from that car.
The only thing I kept of it is one side of sheet Fibreglass, cut to shape.
I nailed it to the wall inside my garage, to remind me to keep things simple enough for me to finish them...
