I'm thinking about a Halibrand V-8 conversion.
What do they go for.I've seen prices all over the place.

GREAT! Noise isnt an issue, every once in awhile I can hear kind of a harmonic-whir from the spur gears, but nothing compared to the rest of the racket my car makes. Looks bitchin, ability to change rear end ratio in 20 minutes is great.
Mine is a 'Torrance City' housing and cover which I think places it around '64 to '70, I got on Egad for $1500, aluminum was perfect as was pinion gear and bearings but lower shaft and bearings needed work. Cost another $500 to get like new. Since then Ive only seen beat-up/butchered early ones going for 1000-1500 or new ones with the big V8 logo on the side pieced together with various parts going for a little more, except for one cherry complete early set-up just like mine that went about 3 weeks ago for $2700(OUCH!!).

Got a pal with a Winters Champ in a '34 Coupe with no fenders and a hand grinder. Everytime I drive it all I hear is loud pipes and burning rubber.

I've got one of them for my '32 roadster project, along with a big block an' a 6 speed. My pals car gave me serious inspiration!

Know the same guy as Charlie Chops, the two of them worked on me until I also bought a QC. Mines a Frankland and it's going into my 30 roadster with a BBC. Got it on e-bay for less than $400 and it's got Ford axles 5 on 4 1/2

I have a Torrance City under my 29 Coupe also. It's been there for 15 years and I've never had a problem with it yet. It'd been in the family for 25 or so years so I have no idea how much it cost. Probably a couple hundred bucks. For some reason the noise gets a little quieter around 55 MPH and doesn't get noisy again until about 70. So it works as a good speedo too!!! Wish I had another one for my current project Coupe. The cool factor of a Halibrand sticking out from the back of an early Ford is way off the scale.

If your after some new ones, then call Norm Rapp racing equipment.{415-333-8510}, he has new cases and parts, but not a lot of them.i have no idea on prices, but new stuff is usually not cheap. i have been getting some gears for my old culver city housing and other parts for it from him.
i hope to get mine under my modified by this summer.

The Winters units aren't really "new" I ran one just like it in my race car for 10 yrs or so, and Halibrand before that. They both are fine although the Halibrand is a little beefier around the front flange area but if you use an open drive line that won't be a problem. In the race cars we would bend the front of the center section with the winters units if ya hit the wall very hard, the halibrands never did. I have a Halibrand in my 31 Ford Roadster that was the last Halibrand I had in my race car.

I have one of the new V8 quickchanges under my 32 cabriolet. Love the looks, but it is noisy. But only with the top up, with the top down it doesn't bother you at all. The noise only bothers you when are on the road for a couple hundred miles, then you start hearing all kinds of things(imagination). I will never take it out though. I have 3 more old ones(Culver City) for other projects.

Halibrand wants $1595 for their's and $1395 for a Winter.
I'm a little gun shy about buying a used unit ($700-$900).I really don't know what to look for in a used one.

there's nothing better then the smooth humm of a quickchange when blowing down the road and backing off the throttle and listening to it sing. Music to my ears.

Oh by the way I first had old Halibrand gears in mine, changed the ratio and used Winters gears and they are MUCH quieter the pitch of the gear is a little different, they aren't Helical but they are rounded a little more than the Halibrands, and seem to be a lot quieter.

Well,I'm going to bite the bullet and buy a new one.Halibrand ($1518) or Winters($1395)I've talked with Halibrand and DickSpadaro's shop,They have just what I want.A closed drive shaft,use your existing axle's and tube
"kit".Any experience? How about installation tips for a first timer?

1st tip: Halibrand's have TWO lube sections; the r&p and the spur gears. Fill them separately. Run a vent tube from the center section (r&p) to a vented puke can in the trunk and you can fill from that also.

I ran a halibrand in my 32 with no problems at all, they whine and cost money but so does my fucking wife. Im running one in my 32 three window I am building right now. They are totally over priced and not really needed but so are our cars!

Heating the case and installing the bearings is really
no big deal.
What axles, housings and diff. and gears are you going to
use?
Give us all an idea of what your usin.. and we can maybe
help out here.

I'm going to replace the '36 banjo in my roadster.I'll be using my bells ,axle tube retaining the torque tube.I'm leaning towards the Winters unite.

Hey... If you're looking for a cheaper option you can always pick up a winters qc for a couple hundred bucks at a circle track race flea market. I scored mine for $150 and I put another $60 into it. Not too bad. When I was in the market for a qc a ebded up with parts of a Stauffer. I have no clue what the deal is with it. It looks like it goes to a banjo center, but I'm not sure. If any of yous have heard of it please drop me a line. ---Sonny O

here's mine. i have'nt even opened the rear cover on it yet. i got it from a friend who said it was a Frankland but i looked and in little letters it says "Winters" on the cover. all i know is i can't wait to get the axles converted and get it in running order under the FnA. it's BEEFY!!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Sounds like a good choice Sedan Dad.
I also used the '36 bells and radius rods.
The small 36 bells look so much nicer than
the later larger diameter ones such as the 40's.
Are you also using the 36 diff and ring & pinion
and axles? They will work just fine.
I used the later '40 axles, diff. and r&p. You
just need to use the 36 bell races and diff bearings
with this switch.
I also used a '34 torque tube and drive shaft,
and a model a spring to make room for the
Halibrand quickie.

My good old buddy Bob.... (Newport Engineering)many of
you know him for his windshield wiper mods.
Has been runnin a Hal Quickie in his 29 A truck and in
his 29 A Sedan for 12 years or better. Still goin strong.

Yeah....same here. I emailed Frankland some time ago about their "new" closed rears....no dice.

Do these guys sell rears to us gearheads or only racers? I really like the look of their QC. Would look killer under my 3W.

Anyone know whats their story ? Also, I scoped out Dutchman Motorsports' QC rear ends too....they seem like a real nice unit....but pricey !!
