I think Steve Moal's shop is on Rides tonight.
Yes,his stuff is shiney and smooth,
but you won't find better automotive craftsmen anywhere.

It's on The Learning Channel (TLC) at 8:00, EST.
Steve Moal is to craftsmen what Stevie Ray Vaughn is to guitar players.

I'll have to check it out...thanks!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
It was a good show but the boat tail looks too much like a PT Cruizer. The front end is just too bulky. I do like Tim Allens car and the red car like it.
Clark
I liked the show too.
The craftsmanship in the boat tail is awesome..but i agree it is kinda bulky looking. I thought the top of the body, at the doors, looked high. It looked 'thick' from the top to the bottom of the body, although it may have been the camera angle's.
That '56 F-1 of Tim Allen's was sick! I don't care if it was 'trad' or not.
500ci HEMI..blown and de-tuned at 1100 hp..YEEEE HAAAWWWW!!
I love that truck! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Pretty cool...nice to see some interesting shit being built without a bunch of phoney arguing or dramatic deadlines being thrown around for a change. A pretty enjoyable hour's worth of television!
Is every episode like that? It strikes a good balance against the comedic chaos of American Chopper!

On Tuesday March 16th Rides will be airing the program entitled Road to the Ridler. They did the filming in a number of the Ridler contender's shops. I'm hoping that they get more into the details of the Steve Moal built '32 Roadster and the '37 Willys that won, along with a few others. Maybe that show will answer some questions as to why the Willys beat out the Roadster.
Rides finished here bout a half hour ago - here being Sunny California.
Ok ... so it's wet and cold, big deal.
Anyway, good show.
Wish they would have focused a little more on the planishing hammer and English wheel techniques.
Regardless, what they did show was a small education for me.
I really like Allens little black roadster.
Catches a lot of different things for me, good looks, sorta All-American hot rod and sorta English sports car of the 50's all in one package.
I'm guessing that it's a great driver as well.
Driver more in the vein of handling than power, but it's probably no slouch there either.
It's not always about brute horsepower.
Lots of nice cars on the car show segment.
Too bad there wasn't more time to focus on the more interesting ones.
Enjoyed Leno's Blastolene Special as well.
The guy knows how to have a good time, but what I like about Leno is, he knows his cars and explains the tech details with ease.
I understand he was a mechanic in New Jersey in a past life and does know what makes em tick.
Jason did ok as well.
At least this time his script writer had the stuff right.
And before you pick on Jason, none of us knows it all.
Second time I've seen it, but I'll be back . . . as certain high ranking politicians in Kaleefornya say.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The vast majority are pretty good to excellent.
And even if you are not thrilled by the subject,it is covered very well, for national television.
No yelling or fake drama bullshit.

I don't know how anyone could find fault with last nites episode. When you compare it to "American Crapper" it was perfection in hot rod entertainment.
I got a real kick outta the guy that built the Blast-o-lene Special. He built it in one year...incredible.

Was it just me or did Tim Allen seem to have a real problem trying to find first gear in that truck? He kept looking down at the floorboards all the time. Maybe the line lock was on?
Seems like the Hemi was running a little rich at idle tho.
Now having said all that , THAT TRUCK RULES! I loved all the car alarms going off.

Tim Allen should be the host of "Rides". A true car guy, a great personality and sense of humor. The show would be perfect.
"Rides" should've done their "Shop Truck" episode on Tim Allen's truck.

I think Tim Allen just bought that truck at the Barrett Jackson auction last month. I remember seeing it sell on the Speed channel.
Great show. I thought it was funny when he referred to Steve as "Mr. Personality"

I enjoy that show as well.It has showen many different parts of the hot rodding world. It would be great to show some back yard guys that build cars. Most of these shops we can only dream about.Think I would be happy to get a job sweeping floors in a shop like this.Jimmy was something else,no playing the camera for him."If you want to film me then go ahead but stay out of my way"He used that English wheel like he new what he was at http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Isn't the Allen car loosely based on an early fifties V860 powered rod? The car I'm thinking of is not all that well known, but was brilliantly styled and crafted.

Denise I completely agree. Jason Priestly does a decent job but he sounds like he's reading copy most of the time. (and written by some body who has just enough of a clue to be dangerous). Tim Allen would not only bring some knowledge to the show but his humor too.

Very happy to see something that was not disected and torn apart for once. That was a great show about a great craftsman & shop. I had the good fortune to be at the viewing last night and Steve Moal sat next to me and watched it for the first time. He was really pleased. He is a third generation custom coach builder in Oakland. He DEFINITELY builds. Very nice guy and a very well put together show. Hot Rod TV programming has hit a new high. If you missed it try and check it out this weekend!

this show is really interesting. it's great to see how the pro shops do it compared to home-built junkyard style. i just wish they would give more details about the rides. jason priestly talks so damn slow it's like he's trying to stretch a 15 minute show out to an hour. why don't they just write more copy about the cars! or just show the guys working more, not every second has to be filled with narration. i'd be happy to sit in silence and watch how that english wheel works.

He ain't been right since his wreck, I doubt if he's trying too hard to stretch it, I would more bet he's having trouble speeding up.

I always figured that a quality product would get the respect it deserves.
Just like a poor quality product gets the respect it deservws.
Rides isn''t perfect, but it's pretty damn good.Personally,I didn't like the styling of the Moal Boattail, but the show did a good job of capturing the craftsmanship that goes into work at that level.
And it shows that it isn't always necessary to cater to the lowest common denominator.
It would have been real easy for them to follow the American Chopper/American Hotrod model,
but they had a different vision of how things should be done and have stuck with it.

The car that got my attention was Leno's "Blastolene Special" with the air cooled tank engine. It got me to thinkin.Theres a Autocar dump truck down the road, that has a 12 cyl. Detroit Diesel in it,with a 13spd.tranny.Twin turbos, stright 6" exhaust pipes on a home built chassis...
The hard part would be the body.
My kids and neighbors think I'm completely nuts http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Umm, you all know that Priestly was involved in a serious racing accident that really screwed him up right? Had to re-learn a bunch of shit like walking and talking. So he's a little off, but you'd be too.

Hey Bruce, you're thinking of the old Dick Kraft roadster, not the first one,but the hand built custom bodied one.Ran a V8-60,and made the cover of Hot Rod.The original still exists, and a buddy of mine had Ron Fournier build an exact clone a few years ago,but with a full sized flathead.Body made of aluminum, beautiful.Fournier had the original in his shop at the time, and copied it exactly.Except the clone is much better constructed, but true to the original design.Awesome car.A few years ago, this car cost a fortune, can't imagine what Moal charges.Since the show kept talking about how long it takes to do the job right,I'll have to hit the lottery to be able to afford that kind of car.My buddy doesn't care much for publicity, and when R&C ran a teaser on the car,my buddy raised hell with Fournier for telling them about it,and telling what city he lived in.So this car doesn't see much daylight, especially since the Motor City Flathead zillion dollar motor lost all oil pressure at about 200 miles...."Rides" is very well done, especially when I compare it to Boyds stupid show....MORE CAR SHOWS PLEASE,I do have cable in the garage........ http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I found this article on the web, thought you guys would find it informative.
The shop was built in 1946 by his father, George Moal, who died in 2002, and his late grandfather, Bill Moal. The same year Steve Moal was born, the elder Moals launched a vehicle body shop and collision repair business that became an Oakland commercial landmark for 56 years.
Steve Moal took over the business in 1971, at the age of 25. It has continued as a family affair since then with his wife, Theresa, coming on board to serve as business manager. The pair are high school sweethearts, having met while students at Oakland High School in the early 1960s.
And when their sons, David and Michael, became young adults, they followed in their parents' footsteps by joining the business. Today, Michael serves as production manager and David, who studied mechanical engineering at San Jose State, handles both engineering and design tasks at the company.
