Mallory unilite ???

Anyone have a wiring diagram? or first hand info.

Im told an electronic module is not required for theses...red=positive on the coil, green is neg on the coil and brown is frame ground.

Can anyone verify this..give me more info..or better yet scan a schematic?

just make sure you ground it to the engine block or they will die on you

Here's just one more tidbit of advice...don't ever, and I mean ever hook up jumper cables to your ride if it's got a mallory unilite on it...you'll fry the guts in the snap of a finger...

I've used Unilites twice, both times the module failed within a couple of years. Pertronix (sp?) sells a replacement module (with even simpler wiring) cheaper than a replacement unilite one, and they seem to be a lot more durable.

never had a problem with a Mallory Unilite. Have had some for years. Even jump started those cars.

I've run a unilite on my old coupe for the past 15 years. Jumped other cars, had to be jumped a couple a times. Still runs fine. Had pertronix on a couple cars, fry and die for no logical reason. Know of others that have also. Wont use them again.

I've run Mallory Unilites in several vehicles, one for well over 17 years - including LOTS of jump starting. If your Unilite is wired correctly (ground is important as mentioned) AND you hook up the cables correctly and in the correct order, you will be fine.

One other thing I remember about them is a warning included with the instructions, never to arc weld on the car with the distributor hooked up.

I guess people have had different luck with 'em, I'd never use one again!

I've had one in my car for a couple of years now and it works great. I needed something a little smaller in diameter then an OEM Delco and this worked for me, to gain a little more firewall clearance. Mine is mechanical, 14 degrees of initial and 34 degrees of total advance is what I have it set up for a stout SBC. If you catch the Mallory guy at an event, he'll usually sell you a spare module for $20.00, it's a good investment. I carry one and have yet to need it but their about $90.00 from Jeg's or Summit. It specifically states in the directions, to not jump a car without unplugging the distributor. It also warns about welding on the vehicle. I think any kind of a power surge will puke the ignitiion module in a heartbeat, otherwise, they are a good performing ignition system.

The next time you go to a Goodguys event, Drag Race, etc., anywhere the Mr. Gasket Semi is, stop and talk to the guys. They will be glad to check our your Unilites and even set-up the advance curve for free. If it needs parts, they will have them on the truck and they are dirt cheap! They carry along a bunch of customer returns and part them out rather then send them back to the factory, they claim it's not cost effective. Some of the stuff was returned for minor cosmetic reasons and they are perfectly functional. I have found these guys to be very helpful and customer focused. Here's something you might not know, there are two variations of the Mallory Unilite, the first generation is a piece of junk and Mallory will tell you that up front. If you have the second generation (rotors are distinctly different)you did good on the purchase, and these guys can fix you up easily, if there are some problems.

Got a buddy that owns a rod shop that ran unilites for years...till he blew two modules jump starting two cars...the spike filter would probably solve the problem...funny thing is about the pertronix shit...alot of guys report problems with 'em...been running one on my Cadillac for about 3 years now without any shit...but i still keep a set of points in the trunk just in case...
