Flathead water pumps

It's time to buy a set of water pumps for my '51 8BA. Read an article in the March issue of Street Rodder about the newer,stronger,better pumps from Speedway. Any comments good or bad about these pumps? It's stated that they're new castings not rebuilds; are these things made in the USA or Canada? They're pricey at $98.00 each and for us Canucks even more with our crap dollar! I know I gotta bite the bullet, but I want a good quality item too.

Did you know that you can still buy the pumps from Autozone and Napa or could as of a year ago. You may already know that.... and you may want that "improved" pump. I have no experience with the "improved" pump. Sorry.

I got new ones at carquest last year - I think they were $65-70 each...

I've got two of the Speedway pumps on the rebuilt flatty I'm putting in my shoebox. It isn't on the road yet but as soon as it is I'll see how good they are. I'll post if there is a problem.

not to drastically change the subject...but i heard AGAIN about a interchange-ability involving being able to use bbc water pumps on a flattie...what's up with that huh? tok

Thanks guys for the good info. I've got to check out a supplier up in Saskatoon; if that doesn't pan out, I'll probably get 'em from Speedway and get 'em shipped to Minnesota; save a few bucks and have to visit the "outlaws" anyway.

Never heard that - have heard Cornhuskers sells a conversion kit to use a 409 pump on a flattie though - ain't cheap.

I boughty a pump from Speedway and had to wait many months for it to arrive. Haven't installed it yet. But if I had to do it again, I would buy mine from Skip Haney from Fla. He builds these pumps with the new style bearings as Speedways but also increases the velocity of them. Alot of guys who use them swear by them because they eliminate many heat problems. Ford Barn will give you his contact number.

Yep - that's the one that uses the 409 pump...not BBC though, haven't seen those.

Petejoe; Thanks for the info on Skip Haney, I'll give him a call before I spend any coin elsewhere.
