The reason could be open wheel modified racing. I was told last year by a down under tourist that was also a racer that this type of circle track racing is very popular and that the most used ausie engines have a small displacement. Its easy to import parts and build a bigger displacement chevy engine. Maybe some of the ausie guys can help out.

drag boats perhaps?
some (or lots of) guys go nuckin' futs over drag boats...
actually i can see why, they do some fairly crazy shit, running those really tight "dirt" courses which are almost like aqua-motocross!!!

For that sort of number of blocks etc, I think you could narrow down the field quite a bit as there are only a few (about 6-8 that I can think of) buisinesses that would be doing that here.
The racing world here has just had a new lease of life with the NEW, world class (so we're told by the pro's) drag strip at Sydney (Australia's largest city).
This is a major thing for NSW, and on a bigger scale, the Aussie drag racing community, as alot of big names of racing put their cars (and businesses) under covers since the closure of race tracks here on the East side of Australia.
Again, since this new strip has been created, opportunities for suppliers to the racing industry have had a revived interest. This new track, as well as the currently high aussie dollar, means time to go shopping on a international level..........

Whist you guys seem to 'shrug off' SBC as belly buttons, down here they are, to a certain degree, a novelty, kinda like in Europe Mercedes (sp?) are taxis, here they're a luxury car.
Personally, I'd love to have a shed full of nothing but 1/2 worn out chevs, would be a rich man.
Note: all of above is not suggest that we are a 'poor' breed of convicts, it's just that by the time the 'middle men' and the goverment get their 'take', our cheap parts become exclusively expensive....
Cheers,
Drewfus
P.S. I'll take 5 of those $75.00 chevs, just gotta find a way to get them here. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
