View Full Version : 8 inch or 9inch Rear under a 62 Fairlane 500 with V8?

What would the factory rear end be under a '62 Ford Failane 500 with V8? Wouldn't that be a fairly narrow 9 inch with the 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern? How about the V8 engine? Y block? A guy has this complete car posted for sale (or optionally parting out) on the local grocercy store bulletin board, and I'm wondering what parts might be good for rod fodder. The '62 Fairlane is a more-door, so I would feel too bad about helping tearing it apart.

'62 Fairlane was the mid-sized one...I know the bolt pattern is 5 on 4.5"...I'm not sure the rear is even an 8", most came with a six, or the 221 v8.

Had a 62 fairlane 500 donor car once.....It was a 260 with an 8 inch.

It came stock with an 8" rear end. So if the car is stock it's definately an 8". The 9" came only with a HiPo 289, and they are very rare.

Mine is a '63 and it came from the factory with a 221 v8 and an 8" rear. The bolt patterns are 5 on 4.5" and it has 3.50 gearing in it. In my opinion its a really good rear end.
If you check on the drivers door, there should be an ID tag. It will have all the info you will need to know about the rear end. Make sure that the rear is original first though.....
Good luck

Hope it's what Von Tingler said. I'll go check it out. 3.50 is a decent ratio in an 8 inch (if that's what it has).

And the '62 Fords that came with 289s are REALLY rare http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I hate to disagree, but the 289 wasn't an option until '63. You could get a 9" in a '62 if it is a "sport coupe". Two door sedan with a 260 V8. If it is just a plain 500, it is probably a 221 SBF with an 8". Bolt pattern will be 5 on 4.5. That is of course if nothing has been swapped over the decades.
