View Full Version : OT Has Ryan lost it?

So lately I'm "running out of resources" on this old computer & it jumbles up the screen & I have to reboot. So I'm thinking I'll
try the early Netscape instead of I.E. & see if it helps.
I open the main page & get this text:
Wally Parks sat in his office, letter opener in hand, and began the ritual he performed every Friday. Reading the ?letters to the
editor? was a way for Wally to gauge the magazine?s performance and reach. It was a fairly normal occurrence for Wally to
see a suggestion in the letters and immediately act onĀ itĀ in the next issue. Wally knew that his readers were his life blood
and keeping an open ear to them was the absolute key to the magazine?s success.
As Wally began to read a letter from a customer in the Midwest, a light went off. This guy was on to something. This idea was
bigger than a simple article suggestion or format improvement. This reader had unknowingly sparked an event that would
change the world of hot rodding forever.Ā Wally started theĀ NHRA just months later.
Aty first I thought "What the hell has Ryan been smoking?", but then I realized
that he uses all kinds of new-fangled code & dosen't care about the older browsers
so that must be it. But what the hell kind of code can't display PLAIN TEXT??? LOL!!!

what version of netscape? the first one I used was .9, that was a while ago, 1994 I think. It didn't know what tables or frames were.

Umm, if your computer is "running out of resources", the browser you are using is probably irrelevant. No matter how old the computer is, it shouldn't work its way up to unrunable. If you aren't highly computer literate, you probably have all sorts of spyware, malware and maybe some viruses. Run an updated virus scan, followed by a full system scan with a good spyware removal tool like Ad-Aware SE. After that, delete all your temporary files in Internet Exploder (Internet Options menu->General Tab->Temporary Internet Files Section->Delete Files). You will probably have to log into all your forum and account sites. Also, you can try to free up space on your hard drive if its almost full. That can slow things up severly. If you still have problems, you can PM me with your computer and operating system specs and I can offer other suggestions to speed you up.

I thought Paul was computer literate, but he was using planet exploder, so I kind of have doubts now.

Ok guys: (Hi Ryan)
For those that don't know (most of you) I'm using my old windoze '95 machine
with the older browsers, 'cause my windoze ME & 2000 machines are BOTH having problems with their modems,
& my linix machine dosen't *recognize* the modem, & I just can't seem to get Linows to work at all (loaded it &
it asks for a username & the TECH (cough) folks at lindows can't seem to give me anything that
allows me to log in & boot up! Funny it never asked me to include a username when loading....). ANYWAY, I use this
computer (& several others) to make sure MY websites work in all the browsers in all the operatings systems in many
different screen resolutions. I use Mozilla, Opera, 5 different versions of I.E., 6 different versions of Netscape; on
win '95, '98, ME, 2000, linix, & MAC (& Lindows if I ever get it to work), at screen resolutions from 480x600 up to 1200x1040.
So I know a little... I just haven't had the time to *work* on the computers in awhile.
Maybe I should try to put the MAC online... I just thought you folks & especially Ryan would get a kick out of the fact that
the code would not even display TEXT correctly in the older browsers! (Funny text is very simple to type in & display correctly
*without* code!) Hey Ryan; what kind of code turns quotations into question marks & adds in those little "A"s with the line over
them? - I didn't check the source. LMAO at all the replies. Glad others got a kick out of it too.

First, let me say... my bad. Most people don't know anywhere near enough to even consider using linux. I just ASSumed. Now, as to your question...
what kind of code turns quotations into question marks
That would be The Evil Empi... err, Microsoft's text editor. That's why I always do all my text editing for web pages on linux/unix workstations or in the worst case, Notepad. That is something I don't understand either... MS can render a quotation mark from a normal character set, why use a different one? Oh crap, gotta go. A pop-up just appeared called MSGoons 2.0 and its threatening to break my fingers.
That would be The Evil Empi... err, Microsoft's text editor.
- Actually, no...

So modern CSS standards call for strings on special characters. If you are developing sites, you should read up on WC3 and stop optimizing for Netscape... :)

I like hitting those sites with os/2 running IBM Web Explorer....and windows 3.1 running netscape 1 and ie 3.02....and fun stuff like that.
Early versions of planet exploder and netscape have fun with modern js laden pages, errors up the kazoo
One of these days I'll get one of my kids to learn css, so he can make my web page pretty

So modern CSS standards call for strings on special characters. If you are developing sites, you should read up on WC3 and stop optimizing for Netscape... :)Yeah, I know (not optimizing for Netscrape, though - optimizing to display in *everything*). But I believe in the KISS rule; also haven't had time to study up on the latest *crap* they're doing. Trying to get some cars built/painted. Tell me this: why the hell are they doing away with bold & italics & replacing them *both* with "emphasis"? Maybe I want *both* bold & italic on some words in some fonts.... not to mention I would like to be able to *choose* whether I want bold *or* italic! Sometimes I think the idiots are making the rules. ;^P
BTW: actually the HAMB dosen't work *real* well in I.E. 4.72.3612.1723 - not that it matters...
