I've got a little dilema I hope someone can help me with. Now this is not quite traditional so don't thrash me too hard. I'm putting together a strut type front suspension for a customers pro street/drag car. He picked up a great deal (or so we thought) on a circle track style Sweet rack & pinion. It is all polished and looks great. All the mounts are built and it is bolted in. Now for the bad part it is way too fast for drag or street duty. Anyone know if the dirt track steering quickeners can be used backwards? Anyone have one in a 2:1 for sale reasonably?

I used to help out on a Bonneville car, and we put one backwards on it.
It worked fine, but we machined it a little to get the free play out of it.

Can you put longer steering arms on the spindles? That would slow it down.
One of the short track rack brands allows the ratio to be changed by swapping pinion gears.
I forget if it's Sweet or Woodward.

I really don't want to change the steering arms If I can help it. The steering shaft is not in yet so that's why I was thinking about the quickener. I'll have to check if other ratios avalible for the Sweet racks. Thanks for the idea.

as far as i can remeber the quickener can be reversed for a slowerer. i read that the racers would some time do it that way to adjust for track conditions.
you could also alter the length of the pitman arm to get a slower ratio. shorter slower, longer faster.

The quickeners I'm familiar with are a sun-ring gear arrangement(not sure if that's the terminology). If gear wear occurs they can be tightened up with a machined-in slot arrangement that meshes the gears more tightly. I see no reason they couldn't be run in "reverse". Seems an ad somewhere for one even offered that use.
Sweet offers ratios from 16:1 to 8:1 as standard depending on the rack size, and other ratios by special order.
E-mail me at winter@ccilink.net if you'd want to look into the possibilities.

Except this is for a rack and pinion, they don't use Pitman arms.
