View Full Version : The All Inclusive Model Thread......kinda O/T

I also am a modeler. After seeing some of the posts lately, I'm coming out of the closet.

I thought I would start this thread where all of the modelers can post without cluttering up the board with tons of different threads.

So guys, post tech tips or questions or pictures or whatever.

My question is, where can I order up aftermarket detailing accesories for my models? Things like wires and hoses and such. There are no bookstores around here that carry model magazines, so I'm lost.

Also, is there a decent modeler forum around? I've searched and not really found anything that great.

Ryan, I'm sorry, if this pisses you off, delete it and slap my ass. I don't mean to clutter up your board with O/T crap, but I figured one big thread is better than lots of seperate ones.

Models were shown in Rod and Custom so I count them as traditional.

There's a decent forum (a lot of good people, a lot of advice) on the message board at www.modelcarkits.com. (http://www.modelcarkits.com.) It's sorta hard to follow because it's just a list and things move down the page very very quickly. Just click on the settings and choose reverse compressed listing, it's the easiest to read.

As far as aftermarket stuff, here's a couple links. The first one has a lot of parts from a lot of different companies, and the second has a lot of links to companies websites:

http://www.scaledreams.com/
http://www.socalcarculture.com/modelcarlinks.html

And here's a link to an album of some stuff I've been working on. Don't be scared by the untraditional stuff!!

Since this is the all-inclusive model thread, and it's on the HAMB, I figure I can ask opinions and nobody'll hold back:

As a modelbuilder, what trad-style parts and accessories would you like to see produced by the resin aftermarket?

Would you like a '37 Ford truck grill shell modified for use on a '34 Ford?

Would a pre-Z-ed Deuce frame help you out?

Is there a certain trad wheel/tire combo you can't ever seem to find?

I do work with a resin-caster and I'm wondering what projects there is real demand for.

All of the above, Dave! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I'd like to see 36 Ford wires added to the aftermarket wheel line-up, as well as:

Stromberg carbs
Holley 94 carbs
Rochester two barrel carbs
4 and 6 carb intakes for popular trad motors
chopped 'oddball' grille shells (Mopars, Buicks, ?? of the 30s)

gowjobs

You know, we could just do like a resin "parts pack" - six grille shells and some inserts in one package, mebbe twelve carbs and three intakes in another... even better, a "universal log manifold" kit.

I was thinking about modifying an old Johan Cadillac ambulance kit I have and mastering a Cargoyle resin conversion body, but Barris would probably sic the lawyers on me since he's co-opted that car for his own promotional purposes.

Guide or Edmunds headlights, anyone?

Dave

Hell yeah...E&J's, guides...wheels. I love the wheels from the ala kart kit. The rear wheels are perfect chrome reverses. Custom grills like '47 cad and '57 cad bumpers. Whippet grill shells. Some headers maybe? Definately any dropped axles, split wishbones, model T and A springs...steering wheels! '60 Olds, those finky square Chrysler ones...stuff like that.

Hack, Model Car Garage sells Strombergs. They look like good ones too. I'll try to post a picture I found of them.

You know, I emailed Rod and Custom about them taking the model section out and they never responded. I thought it was kinda crappy to take that out of the mag when so many guys like us got their start with models....oh wel!

I am really for this thread! Heres something I'v been working on....Feel free to give any criticism

Those wheels and tires are all wrong for that sedan...take em off and send them to me. Just kidding...but that "Rat Rod" wheel/tire combo NEEDS to be sold seperately of those kits, I love them. The sedan looks good, are you gonna fill in the rear wheelwells?

Here's one I've been working on...I call it "Stargazer"

While everyone is asking questions, I might as well throw in mine. It's for die cast customizing, but I think it still applies. I want to change the nose of a front engine dragster to match a car my old man used drive. What do I use? And can I get water decals made somewhere? I can do all the artwork for the digital file and make chromatechs if need be, but I thought I'd ask. Thanks in advance.

It depends how much re-shaping you need to do... lots of guys just use bondo, or if you have more structural stuff, JB Weld.

You can buy decal film in clear or white stock that can be printed with a laser or inkjet printer, then sprayed with a clear fixative spray. Some times they can develop little cracks over tighter bends, but those can be covered up with a little dab of similarly colored paint.

Another option is to contact Dan at Slippery Arts. He'll custom print decals on an Alps printer, which means he can print white and metallic inks on clear decal stock if you need it. Email him at slippery_arts@yahoo.com for more info. He also produces reproductions of old showrod decal sheets which you can purchase through the "Decal Digs" storefront at Dave's Showrod Rally (http://showrods.com)

For doing diecast body mods, I mainly use epoxy to glue back on chopped tops, etc. Then lightweight bondo for any filler. Some of the die casts seem to be powder coated, very slippery. I sand those down to get some tooth for the bondo.

I used those ink jet decals Gowjobs mentioned on this Ford.
I drew the design in Illustrator, then just printed them out. I ordered the starter kit from Micro Mark which included the spray clear rattle can.

Every time someone asks I post this link to a really good, but poorly utilised modelling forum.

Go to http://www.mas-parts.com and click on the "Forum" link. I've posted a couple of times on there but not many people use it.

I reckon we can overrun it and make it a HAMB Modelling forum. At least it will take some of the load off Ryan.

Gowjobs, that is friggin awesome! That looks like the Lindberg Red Rod... is that what it's based on? I really like your ideas on spring placement, looks really good. I pretty much only build 1/8th scale cars myself... much easier to work with than 1/25, but not much subject matter it seems. Are you familiar with Big Scale Modelers (http://www.bigscalemodelers.com) ? Very good site, they have a great picture archieve too.

71 Trans-Am, converted from a 80. All the white areas are new plastic, the frontend is carved balsa wood that i'm going to pull a mold from.

I haven't been building for quite a few months now... I really need to get back into it, but my welding/cutting torch (read soldering iron) burnt out, so it's hard to get major welding done... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I don't have many for sale, but I'm putting a bunch on ebay this weekend.65 Coronet and Cuda(promo),67 Mustang(promo),Resin S10 Blazer,64 Tbird Conv., 65 El camino and station wagon + more.
The only one I'm working on is a Pro Street 66 Ford PU thats a copy of a friends, for him. It's a diecast body, I milled out about a pound of metal.
I have some Pro Mod 41 Willys resin bodies I cast.

Yep, Hobby Heaven! I've been watching your Deuce buildup on there eagerly, it looks amazing. I have one coming in the next two weeks, i'm really looking forward to getting it.

The parts for the T were some of the first 1/8th scale stuff I found. I was talking to a buddy of mine, mentioned looking for the big scale stuff, and he tells me he has this broken trike model with either a VW or corvair motor in the back, and I can have it. Man, that must have been 15 years ago. It's a Revell item, called "Dragon Trike" I think. The "Red Demon T" was the very first thing I bought on Ebay, about 4 years ago. Got it for $15, and it came with the Monogram 283 motor kit as a hidden bonus! The whitewalls and wires are stock for the kit, it also has a sweet track nose if you're ever looking for one.

The vette dragster is the Lindberg "Exterminator" kit, i'm replacing the Y-Block engines with SBC's. The chassis is pretty much stock. I've came a way since the pics, i've welded the hood and headlight covers in place, and made the filler for the sides. I haad joined the front and rear, but I didn't have that coke bottle shape, so I cut it back apart for now.

That poor trans am... it's been on the back burner for a while now. I've puttied the body, but that's about it. I really, really need to get going on it, it still has quite a way to go.

Big scale is fun, I really enjoy it more than the smaller scales. I'm sure you'd agree, judging from your deuce project!

This is somethin I've been stuffin around with for about two weeks, it was the Lil John Butera sedan delviery kit. I dont really know why i bought the frigen thing, but i love chopped T's so, well here it is! As soon as i bought it, i chopped it until i thought it looked good, at first i was going to have a radical chop, but settled with this.
The kit in its standard form is a bit too hi tech with its jag arse end and billet front, but will have to do as I dont have any spares!
The pic shown is how the rear will sit as i have stepped the chassis (looks to be about 3/4 foot in scale!, but the front isnt finished in this photo. Instead of using the kit 289, i built the blown Caddy out of the '59 Chevy El Camino kit which looks awesome.
Excuse the 'paint', It is just black texta. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
