View Full Version : Photochop logo request

OGNC

I was thinking about putting a speedshop logo on the door of my 60 F-100. And since I can't draw a straight line with a ruler, I figured I should ask for help. So here goes... help. Please. Doesn't have to be anything over the top. And if one of you talented souls comes up with one that I really dig, I'll have it painted on the doors. Seriously. and I'll end up doing a story about it in the magazine I work for as well. so you might just end up pretend famous...

I think it's one thing for people to ask for a photochop on a car to show what it might look like with future modifications, but speaking as a professional illustrator and designer, I think it's another thing to ask for a free logo. It's called spec work, and most professional organizations frown upon it. I'm sure you didn't mean to offend anyone, but this request is asking for free design. Amateurs may take you upon the offer, but to parphrase Ghost World:

Enid: "I got this dress at a thrift store. It was only a dollar."
Seymore: "And worth every penny." http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Haring, if I wanted to, I could walk down the hall to the art department here at the publishing company where I work and have 5 or 6 different professionals design some whiz-bang logo for the door of the truck. Hell, I could get a check cut to Steve Stanford or Jeem to design the damn thing if I wanted to. Afterall, I do plan on putting it on the door of the truck and showing how it was done in the pages of the magazine I work for.

But I thought I would toss it out here, you know where all of us hacks hang out to see what kind of stuff they could come up with. I have seen some pretty killer stuff come out of the minds of the people on this board, and a lot of them aren't "professional" graphic artists. But they're creative, passionate and who knows, maybe one of them has an idea floating around in their head that will knock our collective dicks in the dirt. And if that indeed does happen, don't be surprised if some of your colleagues "borrow" an idea or two from something that a lowly mechanic or computer tech came up with.

And if one of the HAMB members comes up with something that is befitting the truck, I would be proud to paint that "one dollar dress" on the door.

Oh, and if you decide to come down off your high horse, I'd be willing to see what you could come up with as well. On second thought...

If he had posted his message to "Professional Logo Designers Message Board" I could see your point. But he didn't. He posted it to a do-it-yourself hot rodding forum. Not a forum for hawking your talents as a graphic artists.

You nor anyone else should be offended.

cool truck Court. an old guy i know is restoring one just like it. almost the same colors too. his is bright red and white and the color split is right where yours is. he is doing a killer job on it and just painted the fenders the other day.

i like the logo Cleatus did for you but you should have "Halowell's Speed Shop" on it. i don't understand what is up with these other guys though. if they don't want to do it don't do it. move on. nobody cares if you don't want to do it or why you don't want to do. just shut your hole and go away.

I knew you guys were going to rip me a new ass. I'm a big boy, so I'm not offended.

Spec work is bad for everyone. I don't ask Vern Tardel or Mike Bishop to design a car for me for free.

I thought that you might not have realized that your request could be construed as unprofessional or unethical. And, yeah, the Graphic Artist Guild and American Institute of Graphic Artists consider spec work to be unethical, so anyone who thinks I'm "on a high horse" might want to consider the opinions of the two professional organizations for graphic artists, for what it's worth.

I certainly wasn't asking for anything in exchange for designing a logo, but I would think that fair compensation for whoever took on the task is reasonable.

I'm guessing that anyone who can't understand my opinion probably doesn't like American unions either. Each to his own.

I've helped quite a few guys and gals here on the board. Frankly, I'm disappointed that others would take pleasure in disrespecting one's professional practices. With friends like these ...

**DONOTDELETE**
02-24-2004, 02:14 AM
Jesus Christ Don. You take yourself way to seriously.

First of all, neither Vern Tardel nor Mike Bishop were asking you to spec a logo. What's the difference? They would be asking you to contribute to their work product i.e.- to increase their profit. The difference here? GBNC is a hobbiest! POSTING ON A HOBBIEST BOARD!!!! With no profit motivation.

The Graphic Artist Guild and American Institute of Graphic Artists governs professional artists. I don't recall GNC asking any "professional" artist to waive their fees and do a bunch of design work for free. And that's where the ENTIRE premise of your arguement falls completely apart. THIS IS NOT A FORUM FOR PROFESSIONAL DESIGNERS!!!!

What if every mechanic that answered a mechanical design question demanded a fee for their design expertise here? It wouldn't be a hobbiest forum then would it? No. It would be a professional design portal for hiring design work.

Everyone is here to help each other out - for guess what Don? - FREE! You fucking moron! And, please, don't bring up "disrespecting one's professional practices". No one asked you for your "professional" practices. Yet you chose to call him on the carpet and disrespect him by making him feel like an asshole for asking for help.

And just for sake of clarity - I belong to a union. My entire family is or was union. And I can't fucking stand you guys that are more a part of the arguement than the solution. Not to mention you have no arguement here!

Maybe The Graphic Artist Guild or the American Institute of Graphic Artists has a board for selling graphic design services where your point would have made sense.

If your not here to help and your here to sell - your here for the wrong reasons. You should be here to have FUN. Maybe you should put the pen down and pick up a wrench and go back out to your garage and try to remember why you came here in the first place.

I usually dont post shit like this, but I just have had to deal with some shit like this on the job. Court was just being a good lil HAMBer and getting some of the kids involved until Mr. Graphic Professional steps in.

These guys squabble over dimes like fucking crackheads...face it you draw pictures and pick put fonts for a living, it' not brian surgery, believe it or not, people who havent gone to art collage do have talent & know what people like...

Haring, you have a very valid point of vue.
Spec work is like asking 3 tailors to make you a suit and THEN deciding wich one you'll buy...
But in this case, what OGNC is looking for is NOT 'corporate Identity' but rather a 'period correct' expression of what 'might have been...'. It might sound like a play on words but he is not solicitating pros as much as asking fellow HAMBER who happen to have talent. FoMoCo's very poetic explanation kinda sums it up here...

KCsledz
02-24-2004, 09:16 AM
I think that there is a bit of professional courtesy that needs to be involved. If I were to ask for help in something that I know others do better than I do I would feel obligated to repay the favor.

For instance if I am good at designing a logo I would be more than happy to tell others what process to use to get to the final result. I might not design it for them unless I am otherwise swayed to. That is why I am on the HAMB to learn how to build a RPU by myself, learning from everyone how to get it done for myself. But if I need help building my car then I would make provisions to in some way compensate those that helpes me. I wouldn't so much ask for free parts because we all work hard to get what we have. On occasion we have surplus of time, services or goods. It is up to our personal judgement when to give those away.

Everyone has validity to their points. I have shared my talents with others on the board when I have time to give. Other times I have just not had time. I guess my point is if you ahve time you give what you got! If you don't then you don't (no big deal).

A) Haring is correct, regarding a professional situation.

B) Assjelly is correct also. We are all hobbiests here regardless of our profession

C) We all like to help each other out and share and tap into each other's area of expertise. That's why we're here.

The blurriness comes in with the magazine and publication.

Yeah, you're right. "It' not brian surgery."

What happened to the old HAMB, when it was common for everyone to tell each other to go fuck off? You guys want a happy little circle jerk of love and friendship! Blah.

OGNC, I wasn't asking for money. Hell, I wasn't even going to submit anything. I just thought the offer of mention in a magazine was lame. If a striper did some artwork on your car, would you pay him with a mention in a magazine? If a guy chopped the top, would you say, "Here's a copy of my magazine. Your name is on page 13. Don't spend it all in one place!"

I thought it was awesome how you name-dropped on some other artists, though. "I'm not anti-artist! I happen to know a few artists! One even lives in my neighborhood and he's quiet and respectful."

Well girls, I'd like to keep arguing about this, but I gotta get back to work. I'm on the fast track, you know.

Look, I wasn't out to offend anybody. And this post wasn't meant to draw every professional graphic artist on the board. It was meant for the guys who enjoy doing this kind of stuff. I guess the point is that I am not trying to pick anybody's pocket or take food off their table. And as far as the magazine thing goes, I try to hook people up on a regular basis with paying gigs (just ask Trosley, Jeem, Tim Conder, Michael Montenegro, etc.).

This on the other hand is a project that wasn't going to have anything to do with the magazine until my boss happened to walk in and see whizzerrick's version up on my computer screen. He said "It would be neat to do a story on putting one of thise shop logos on the side of your truck."
Well, at this point the ball was already rolling, so I figured that I would hit up some fellow HAMBers to see if they were up for it. And since I am going to have to drive the truck, I figured it would be cool to have something that actually meant something to me (because it was created by someone on here) rather than just some random logo that my painter came up with.

I did get a bunch of cool versions e-mailed to me (I guess they were the people that didn't want to deal with getting a load of shit from Haring), whizzerick and cleatus' versions and to be honest it is going to be hard to choose one of them over the other. I guess that I just want to say thank you to everybody (killer included) that actually took the time and contributed something constructive to this post.

I guess that I should have known that there would have been some typical HAMB drama to go along with it. Afterall, this is the same board where a post debating weather Jesse James is a sell out or not will make it to the front page over and over and a decent tech post will end up on page 13.

02-24-2004, 01:18 PM
Jeez...whats all the fuss?

I could see it if someone called a graphic design business and asked for a free logo that may or may not end up being used - go ahead and jump their shit, but it's just a silly messageboard. Everybody contributes their skills and time to help each other out - and MOSTLY JUST TRY TO ENTERTAIN EACH OTHER.

For instance, ElPolcko solved a brake problem for me that had me pulling my hair out for weeks. He's a pro builder, but did he expect compensation? doubt it.

For what it's worth, I did not do the design in hopes of it being in a magazine, I did it in hopes that someone might see that they are taking things too serious. I did it for entertainment value. I spent all of two minutes on it. So at my usual rate, I guess OGNC would owe me about $1.50.

But that's OK, I have made a good living as a graphic designer for something around 19 years by catering to clients who are burnt out on the delicate genius attitude that many other designers seem to posses.

I'm sorry to be such an ASS.

I don't know what my problem was. I had a few people email me to say, "you're right!" and a few that said, "you're a prick! (or something like that)"

I think both were true. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If we can all agree that I was a BUTTHEAD, I think that we can all lay this to rest. Let's leave it at that.

That's a cool truck, OGNC, and I'm sure it will look cool with whatever you choose.

To bury the hatchet, I decided to throw a design into the hat. Don't worry --it's free. I lowered and chopped the truck to make it TUFF and SCARY, but then I offset the rockability of it all by adding a cute logo that shows that you are still a sensitive and caring man.

I was wondering how a post with this title was this long...drama. Now that its over, I'll stir it up just a tad. I think OBGYN's (sorry, had to do it http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif )idea was to give a HAMB'r credit in the story... which will have his name printed, and available to a very large audience to sample his work. Its called free advertising. You should pay him.
If I were in his shoes, I'd like to have a pro do the logo and get him some leads. That way, it could lead to something bigger. If some photochopper did it, nothing good would come out of it.
