I am very appreciative of the input on intakes.

I now want to know which carb to mate with the air gap RPM. (1500 to 6000) And if I order this air gap rpm I want to know how to improve the idle to 1500 performance. I do not care for the spread bore of the air gap performer (idle to 5500). So if there is a way to assure the idle to 1500 performance, I believe the air gap RPM will be ok. I am currently choosing the Holley 600 cfm with electric choke. Part # O-80457S.. I like how easy the jets can be changed and the jets I can buy for it. I live at 7500 ft. If the edelbrock is better I'm all ears. I'm a novice at this and it's the first father son project. This is a 327 with a balanced 350 crank and 262 extreme energy cam. The block has been decked and I've bored it at .40 over. I am installing a new 700 r4 trans. So if any one needs a power glide that works...

I also want to get the proper rearend for this use. The car is a 64 Impala 4 door being slamed a bit and shaved that will be used in conjunction with a restored teardrop trailer for family touring.

Best regards,

One thing to take into account with the 700R4 is to make sure you get the appropriate bracket for the kickdown linkage. VERY IMPORTANT. I know Holley has one that slips over one of the rear mounting holes on newer modles that have a little tab for it to slide in. The geometry and pull of this cable is crucial. I'm told that you can burn out your tranny pump in a hurry if this cable isn't set up correctly.

The air-gap RPM will work fine with a 600 cfm carb on a 327.

Although the RPM is designed for a higher rev range, it is still a very streetable manifold. The torque may be slightly down between idle-1500 compared to a Performer, but with the low first gear of the 700R4, it is not going to matter.

The stock rear should be strong enough unless you abuse it.

How much for the Glide? I am always interested and I'll be in NM at Rad's in about a month. It is the aluminum cased glide, yes?

Even though I've used Holleys in the past, I have always had great success with Carter/Edelbrock carbs on the street. Their easy to work on and seem to be less trouble over the long haul. Carters that I had bought 17 plus years ago are still going strong on another friends hot rod while I bought Edelbrocks and found them to work well with my sbc.A 600 Edelbrock or Carter would be a good size for that punched out 327. Inregards to a rearend in that 64 I think a 3:55 ratio would be a safe bet. It give you pretty good cruising legs with the overdrive and get that heavier body style up and going quicker. That's my food for thought, hope it helps and good luck with your beast!!!

P.S. Send in some photo's!

I'm a big fan of the Edelbrock/Carter carbs. I also like quadrajets for the street, though they are a pain to tune. Not a fan of Holleys on anything but a race car...
