Both, I find the body holes are usually egged. I have had poor luck taking them apart. Seem's the screws were staked, good idea considering what could happen. The bases I stripped are just bases, plates and shafts are toast. By the time you drill the staked area enough to free up the screw it's a mess. I see Speedway has plates and shafts now, when I get to where I need to I think i'll get some and try renewing one myself. I just aquired a reamer that may work to straighten out the egged bore. Some type of nylon probably would work for a bushing, may be more sucessful than brass. Out of the dozen flathead carbs that have gone through my hands I have had about 3 that were snug and won't leak vacum. I have bases now needing renewal, if needed them I could farm the job out, I heard $50 each. I guess I'll sit on them and try my luck on them someday when I need to. You should get a spare base and the speedway stuff and try rebushing it, works out you'd be on a roll.

The shafts wear more often but the bodies will get there sooner or later. Oversize diameter shafts are available when needed. Running a RH drill bit through the hole backwards will give you the slight oversize you need should you go to oversize shafts. Use some type of thread lock on the throttle plate screws.

I agree with 30tudor, I just rebuilt 3 - 97's and a 94. The oversized shafts are also available through Charlie Price at Vintage Speed (http://www.vintagespeed.com) . He sells a kit I believe with a reamer of some sort. I don't know who's cheaper, and I've had good experience buying from both places. I've been told Charlie's a good one to ask for advice on 94's and 97's as well, but I can't speak first handed. Lately they've only been answering the phones on Tuedays and Thursdays due to workload.
