Got started on the triumph project....all the tabs are off and holes welded up...decisions made on tank...gonna stay low, like it is in the pic and the springer is definitely going on ebay. Not sure about the rear fender lentgth...maybe short with no rear braces or longer with a short round stock sissy bar.

That's what I think a rigid frame should look like, with the top tube running straight/unbent from the steering head to the rear fork.

Is the tank going to mount like that or are you going to lift it up so those front mounts fasten to the frame?

I'm gonna have the bottom of the tank parallel with the top of the motor. With it elevated, it gets too "custom" and I am heading more toward the drag race style. That's why the long springer is leaving, and it gets a stock tube front end with hopefully a 21" front wheel.

At first, I didn't like the empty space in front of the rear wheel, but the oil tank will help....I don't want to shorten the rear frame section and loose the straight line of the top tubes...or decrease ground clearance...I plan on yankin this one thru the turns. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Looks great Hatch! I'd sure like to build one someday.
I didn't get much car stuff done this weekend, but we did get all the hull skin put on the wooden boat project. Can't begin to desribe how good it feels to work with my Dad. I was afraid he'd lose interest when we lost my Mom, but he's doin ok. I think the work helps.
Keep us posted on the chopper, I like the direction your goining with it.

When I built one it will look like that. nice job.

I built a seat riser for my 32 PU. that incorporates a hinge system for battery and storage access under the freebie seat. Tomorrow I'll be able to sit in the final location and go...vroom, vroom with my elbow out the window. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Keep the 18.
It is startin to get the "LA 1963" look, which deserves to be revived.
Gettin rid of the long springer is a great idea.
Workin on one of my Trumpets too today, feels good don't it?

hatch
02-22-2004, 04:43 PM
yeah..the 18 stays...gotta see what stock length forks do for the profile...I'd like to run a 21 on the front and have the bike level.

hatch

Quikrod...great idea...think I'll add the fxlr front end to my shopping list....

JohnnyG...what's the bike in the background...looks like pan tank badges, but maybe a shovelhead motor....unless maybe its a 65??? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

18 rears are nice, tire selection isn't as good, but they are lighter in rolling weight. But if you went to a 16 you can have those nice double pin whites. Also those guys runnin hard tails with big fat tires do so for a reason, if you run lower air pressure its better on your ass. You might try to find a sporty fork to keep it low I know they are a little shorter than fx's. I might also IMHO go with a 35mm instead of the 39mm they are just a little slimmer and have a better vintage 'look' to them. either way it shouldn't be too hard to come across them. Just remember if a fork is off the bike its probably cause its bent. but new tubes are cheap enough, if you get it cheap enough. you can also but new forks from 4-600 bucks.
FS
Whatcha want for the old forks? and how extentend are they? gotta pic?

My mom and I finished the new front seat for Faye the Chevrolet.. Mom calls it my "salute to Jane Mansfield". Next weekend we're tackling the door panels and hope to finish the job. The only thing I'm not changing is the headliner since the one in it currently is in great shape. This was my first car upholstery project. My mom did this professionally for upwards of 10 years and THANK GOD FOR THAT! She made patterns from the original seat covers which were mohair and totally shredded. We both did the assembly. It's not as hard as I thought it would be...

I can't wait till it's alllll done!

Friday night I drank a lot of Guinness.

Today I drug home my 7th Honda.

...Uhh , I Mean uh... oops...

I mean, its the next chopper project after I start the first one!

http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

When I was test driving it (after jump starting it and having a little BBQ in the airbox with starting fluid)

my boot lace got looped around the shifter. Duh. That was an adrenaline rush in of itself! Excessivly long boot laces boots much shorter now. Now I know why those "biker types" carry a bowie knife on their belt...

Tinbender, I wish I'da known that on Friday and you were a hell of a lot closer. Gonna be out that way with the vert, am taking a 3 week trip after B'ville up your way and on to the great white north and back down through Glacier and Yellowstone via Driggs.

Hatch you are almost close enough but both of you are too late. It's all done now, getting stoked for next weekend.

If you get one you'll have to be prepared for hoes to just jump into the car anytime you're cruising a red light district!

Been there done that, used to go there in the summer when Tex was still around there a lot. Haven't been there for a couple of years. Idaho Falls that's only 25 mile from Blackfoot, was thinking of going to do an inspection of the Blackfoot Cheese Co. and then maybe get to deduct the whole trip.
