View Full Version : Detroit Autorama Roll Call..........Meet and Greet info

Looks like it's almost time for the much anticipated Detroit Autorama. From the looks of things already, it's going to be a not to be missed event once again. There are 40 20X20 displays scheduled to be there (the most ever) with approx 25 of these being Ridler contender hopefulls. These are fresh built cars, never seen in public or published before now. Of course they all won't be HAMB material but they are exciting to see none the less.

It's turning out to be a huge gathering of HAMB and RRT folks and I'm getting really excited to see everyone. So after reviewing all the emails and PM's on who was coming when, I kind of figured that a early afternoon as well as an early evening Meet & Greet each day was kind of necessary for everyone to meet everyone. This is just a suggestion, so if it doesn't suit someone, please speak up and we can modify the times.

Thursday.....2pm and 6pm
Friday.........2pm and 6pm
Sat............2pm and 6pm

And so far no one seems to be going on Sunday that isn't going one of the other days as well.

Race is setting up a "lounge" area right next to VooDoo Child which will be located right as you walk in the front doors (I'll post an EXACT location in refrence to the front door on Wed nite) so that's probley a good place to meet up, or even just to stop by at any time to say "hi" and put your feet up.

In the past there has been a group of us that have gone to Lafayette Coney Island (2 blocks away) for lunch on Friday. Meet by VooDoo Child at 1pm if you want to head to lunch with us, we'll be back by 2pm for the Meet and Greet. Cobo Joes across the street is scheduled for dinner on Friday around 7pm or so and Niki's in Greektown on Saturday nite. We usually take the people mover there and the resturant is large enough that there normally isn't a wait, even on a Sat nite. For those from out of town, there is a casino in Greektown for your gambling pleasure.

With all that being said...... who's going and on what day?? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

As it looks now, the three stooges (me, Chris50 and the elusive Mojo66) will be driving up on Friday night.
We will be refreshed and ready for the show Saturday... unless we stayout at the strip club too late...

I will be doing the Hot Rod and Restoration trade show in Indy on Friday... don't be surprised if I am wiped out when you see me on Saturday! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

...speaking of Ridler cars... don't forget to check out The Million Dollar Willys Actually its supposed to have over $650,000 in it. It was finished by a local guy in Plainfield, Il. I grew up a block from the guy who owns it.
Look for the red 39 Willys (with 40 front clip) in the $70,000 exotic wood display with the ostrich interior ($18,000 in dead birds alone)... and try and figure out where the other $500,000 went...

(look at the build up book... lots of really, really neat non-traditional stuff went into it.)

I just got back, one word WOW! I took a few teaser photos that I'll post alittle later tonight, baking cookies at the moment. Dirty, if it were Big Olds that I was driving I'd park him on the roof and not worry one minute. Cobo roof parking is only $4, cheapest in the city and there lots-o-room. Roof parking closes at midnite.

If I remember correctly they started turning off lites around 11pm on Thursday nite.

If you walk in the main doors, VooDoo Child is 5 asles to the right and three cars back, you can't miss him.

Weather forecast for Detroit this weekend is low 50's, so those that are coming from the frigid north can leave their longjohns, mittens and wool hats at home. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think that's Tom Gale's roadster if I remember correctly. There was a write up on that car in one mag awhile ago. He's been building it for something like twenty years or the like.MEGA DOLLARS.
The Starbird Corvair belongs to a friends brother in law.Saw it at a local show a couple years ago.I think it has about a hundred miles on it since new.Chuck Leighton's really nice 57 Ford in back of it.I just did a cartoon rendering of it yesterday.(pic included).See ya tomorrow!

MrGasser

No, that's not Tom Gale's car, Gale's car was a '34 Ford roadster with a Mopar motor in it,...that is what's his name's car...Eric???,..used to design for Caddilac, he designed Cadzilla, built that chopped '55 Buick,(flat black with a yellow roof),...it was in Rodders Digest, they actually dropped the roof straight down into the car, built it over in Canada,...shit!, I can't think of his name!...

...anyways, that car is a steel '32 CHEVY roadster, one of those ExperiMetal bodies, that's a Potvin, front mounted 6-71, and, yes, that is the magneto, and no, it wasn't an afterthought, the car was designed, and planned, and moved from here in the Detroit area to the left coast several times before it was finally finished.

Larry Erickson(sp) worked for Caddy, last I heard he was with Chrysler.
That car was in Hot Rod maybe a year ago.

The Buick was built in Windsor by Jim Bailie,
I'll stop in a visit him on the way to Cobo.

LARRY ERICKSON !!! Thanks Unk, that's it! I knew there was an "Eric" in there somewhere! I believe he's actually the head of GM design now, graduating from Cadillac. I met him when the car was up at Dan Webb's place for awhile, Dan did alot of fabrication on the car.

Great time at Cobo today...picked up RocketJ2 and his buddy and headed down there at about 12:30.

Saw Beatnik drooling over that wicked blue roadster, and caught up with Donzie about the same time. Lotta cool cars hidden amongst the boring stuff...checked out many 49-54 Chevs, including a wildly chopped dark blue four door fastback, among others.

Spent some time resting up with Fab32, Fuel Pump, Hatch, Hot Rod To Hell, Kritz, Kustombuilder, Cherry Blossom, Flathead Pete, Baby-Momma, Tiny Elvis, Fast Elvis, Safariknut, Mr Gasser, Brush, and of course Denise and Rudy in the impromptu "HAMBers Lounge" area behind Roadstar's SWEET black 40!!!

And Denise, thanks for the eats. Mmmmmmm, good. But I forgot to give you my money for the raffle.

Had a blast at pre-Autorama. Great to meet more HAMBers. Great to see others I haven't seen in a while. Did anyone else see Blakie Gejean? I wanted to talk to him but he was always busy with others and I didn't want to be rude. Denise and Rudy, I owe ya one. Thanks again. Pete and Jenny

As everyone has already stated "GREAT TIME IN DEEEETROIT. Denise, what can I say, your the best (someone else knows that to). Thanks for the cookies and brownies. I'll forgive you about the Mt. Dew, but just this once.
What a great time meeting everyone and the cars were the frosting on the cake. I hope someone posts a picture of that '29 2dr that was converted into a tub and had the rear shortened and shaped like a Vicky. That was one of my favorites and I'm sure its going to end up in one of the magazines. It was flatty powered, blue, w/a carmel-orange interior. AWSOME!!!!
Hope to be back down Sunday and see some more HAMBrs. I'll tell you one thing being able to meet prople from the HAMB makes an automotive event that much more enjoyable. Can I get an AMEN!!!

Frank

Someone else did a good description of what was done to the blue tub on another post.
I talked to the builder/owner for a while on Thursday. He's from Virginia. He told me he built it out of left over parts he had laying around. The orange interior only happened because the pinstriper did an orange line around the car and then said 'now your interior has to match'. Looks perfect IMO. I also commented on the neato one foglamp on the front spreader bar. He told me it wasn't planned that way but he only had one so he put it on. Flattie with a Muncie 4 spd. I asked him how it drove. Couldn't tell me 'cause he finished it the day before but he did drive it into Cobo......put a whopping .3 miles on it.
