I just finished changing the color of my leather seats for my truck. They were tan late model trans am leather. Now, they are bright friggin' red '98 Chevy trcuk seats. I used some spray dye called 'Formula 40 Vinyl Coat. Anyone ever use this stuff? Seems to cover real well. My first seat was done earlier this week and looks killer. Doesn't seem to rub or even scratch off. I'll post pics when I can swipe a digital cam from someone (JOE). http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif Pete

Here is the pic of Pete's seats, they were tan in color, the color looks good and is real flexible.

They look real nice!

I didn't even know it was possible to "re-dye" vinyl.

Where did you pick up that Formula 40 Vinyl Coat?

MercMan1951 dyed some white seats blue for a Cougar he had. It worked real well, and only wore on the high rub areas, if I remember right. When he gets home I'm sure he'll chime in!

Thanks guys. I bought that stuff at a local janotorial supply place of all places!! It's called Taney Hill. I don't know if they are national or not. If ya gotta have some and can't find it, lemme know and I'll hook a HAMBer up. Steve, the sonoma blue books at $38,425, for you I'll go $5.00. See ya Thurs.

Yeah, I had some real nice white vinyl seats out of a Junked Thunderbird one time I needed to replace some thrashed seats in a Cougar, but the cougar was blue.

I cleaned them really well with some laquer thinner before I painted the blue, I used some Dupli-Color brand vinyl dye from the auto parts place...applied in thin coats. It looked really nice for about a year, and then the areas where your ass was started to wear back to the white underneath. I wouldn't do that again on any car I intended to keep...I sold it before it started looking bad...but saw it a couple years later. It fine for dash pads or door panels with the right prep work, but seats is another story...

Maybe it was the prep...maybe it was the paint...I dunno. I know the local Painter's Supply (auto paint) store carries various formulas of PPG vinyl paint, and you have to use a special pre-paint cleaner that you spray on anything you're painting first, to promote adhesion. Maybe that would have been more durable in my case. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
