hey guys. I noticed its my one year birthday here on the hamb today. There must be some good stories on how you guys/gals ended up here, whether your a newbie or an original, so how'd it happen? For me, I was told by 59BuickWagon around new years eve 2 years ago. I was in florida at DISNEY WORLD of all places and I was getting on a tram and he walked up to me and saw I had a so cal speed jacket so he asked if I had a car. We talked for awhile and he asked me if ive heard of the HAMB. I hadnt and he told me its great to find info and parts for our shitpiles. He gave me his card and wrote the website down. So, when I got home and lurked for about a month and finally signed up. Its been very cool thanks guys (especially Dennis http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif).

Who/What introduced YOU to the hamb??

It was JohnB who I was dating at the time. He was surfing the HAMB at my place and I was lurking over his shoulder. This was about 4 years ago or so. It was not the place for me at the time. I did lurk off and on for over 2 years before I finally decided the HAMB's unusual message board style suited me, so I registered and did and intro. The rest is history.

Daddy-O(Scott) from Cleveland turned me on to the HAMB.

I met him at 2003 Detroit Panel Jam. He was telling me all about it and the Friday Art show. There were a couple of other Hamber's there he pointed out. One guy had a kool HAMB t-shirt on. Safariknut was there but, I hadn't met him yet ( Me too shy ).

I lurked for a couple of weeks. I was really digging it. I thought the place was really wild, and mistook Denise's signature for a literal translation ( You goof, Joel ).

Anyway, It was a post by Zenor that got me hooked ( African-American drag racers on MLK day ). Posted very lame intro and had 9 welcomes ( Thanks guys ).

Since then, I've made many new friends both here in Chicago, Michigan and elsewhere.

I hit the board at least 2-3 times a day. Funny thing is I had the Jalopy Journal booked marked for a solid year before that and never knew the HAMB was just a click away.

Long live the HAMB. Where we put the brother in Brotherhood.

I was introduced by "google." I was looking for some advice on doing a steering column swap and did a search for a hot rod/custom message board and up popped the HAMB. Of course like the dumbass I am I posted a question without the proper introduction and got slagged by the intro police. Been hooked ever since.....

I think it was a link on one of David Perry's sites?

I don't even remember. I think there was a link on some webpage. Funny thing is, I'd been all over the Jalopy Journal, and didn't realize the HAMB was part of it untill a few weeks after I'd joined up. Took even longer to realize Ryan's '38 was the one on the Journal homepage. I'm usually not that dense.

Hey Briggs, you and I share the same 'starter day' on the HAMB, what a trip.
I came across a link to the HAMB through web cruisin' other car sites. Somehow veered off the coarse people's webpages of their custom trucks, and suddenly found a link to this big mag wheel, with these different sections to it. Before I figured there was an actual message board on it, I got into the articles on events and cars. Some of the articles seemed kinda dated, it made me wonder how a website stayed in existence with outdated material on it. THEN I saw the messageboard, and quickly got hooked... which is really different for me, since I'm usually not a chat-room kinda guy. I think I'm THE Humboldt chapter of HAMB, and am trying to give it some of word of mouth, locally. Who knows what the year ahead will bring with that.
Happy HAMB Day, Briggs!

Makes ya wonder about HAMB traditions on starter-birthdays, if any there be. That party at hotrodladycruzer's posted live, a few months ago, seems like a tough act to follow, yet it'd be cool to see more of those in-progress hot rod parties 'n BBQ's. But HAMB'ers have been generous year-round, so I don't wanna push the envelope. 'Sides: My 30th REAL birthday's next month... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Fuelpump and Hatch kept telling me about this cool message board that catered to old style rods and customs. I finally started lurking and true to my nature couldn't keep my mouth shut so I joined up. I've met some terrific people and have had a ball reliving the kind of cars I grew up with. THANKS RYAN !!!!

I actually ran into FarmerJohn in the grociery store. I was wearing my old car club jacket, and he asked if it was a local club or not at the check out line. I got to know 'em after that, finding out he lived just down the block from me! He led me into the HAMB, and that's how that happened.

I used to be on the original RRT quite a bit.
Seems like someone over there mentioned the JJ and I wandered over.
Checked in as a lurker a few times, asked a few questions and answered a few others.
Never did do an intro and no one hassled me.

A little ways down the line the Great Flame War erupted.
Seemed like it was getting settled down ok and then the guy running the old RRT pulled the plug and it was off the air.

Hung out here pretty regular and then FatCat fired up the new RRT.

The RRT and the HAMB are the only two hot rod places I hang out.
Looked in at a few others, but found them lacking.
The HAMB and the RRT are the only two places I've found where you can get good information that is not re-hashed bullshit somebody heard somewhere else.
Guys and gals at both places post experience and knowledge and when you get right down to it, that's what it's all about.

I've been fortunate in meeting some of the RRT'rs and HAMB'rs and made some good friends.

People come and people go at both sites, but there's a core of enthusiasts that remain and they are what makes both the HAMB and RRT what they are.
Slightly different places, but in the end, people who enjoy the hobby for what it is and what it can be and who are always striving to improve their skills.

Taking part in both sites pretty much makes my day.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Then one day he sends me the joke link about the prostreet S-10 guy that wanted to turn his truck into a rat rod (it was really him) well I signed up just to post some shit on him. Lights and sirens started flashing and the Intro police came out. HaHa.
Well its been just over a year and I hope I was able to contribute some value to the HAMB. I know I have learned so much and I am grateful.

I was first introduced to the HAMB by wayfarer a couple months ago. he told me about it off and on and how great it was. it wasn't until i suffered extremely hard time with the passing of my father that i came here. wayfarer told me that many kind HAMBrs wanted to help with the project i started with my dad and were sending parts. i had to see what this was all about so i signed up-and have been here ever since. it's a great place!

Lots of things led me to the HAMB...
JustinM told me to sign up, after I had been lurking for a few months. (I've also know SamIyam since Jr High.) I started out on here as "BilletProof_J" when I used to do the show with Kirk, but changed the name to Jive a while later.

I used to frequent the Jalopy Journal and Hot Rod Deluxe sites way back.
Also got my Lincoln featured in TSR #2 - Thanks Jason!

Made lots of good friends here, including Ryan, and the people on this site really helped my make some decisions in building my roadster.

Thanks all!

BTW, I've heard so much mention of RRT over time, and keep forgetting to ask what RRT is, would be interested in checkin' it out, by the sounds of it.
After being on the HAMB for awhile, I met a HAMB'er in- person - Purple, at last year's Kool April Nights. It was surreal and funny to talk back and forth, in-person, about messageboard names.
Hard to explain on a messageboard, but sitting in a diner, y'figure either it sounds weird to the waiter/waitress, or they're on some web board, too, just nodding to themselves.

As is the case with many who share my registration date, I, too, was a regular on the old RRT (still have my 'T'shirts).
And as with C9, I wandered over after someone else gave mention, just to see.
At first, I opened my big yap, and was shut down by Ryan, but I learned, and, I hope, have helped in time as well.

My brother-in-law found the HAMB maybe two years ago. He kept ranting about it, and tried a dozen times to get me to check it out, but from his description, it didn't sound too interesting.

Then, one night...I peeked in to see what was up. There was a huge post going on about manual trannies vs automatics, so I jumped in with my commentary...just sticking my toe into the pirhana tank to see if they REALLY bite!

I got called out and had some fun, then posted a brief but forgettable intro.

It's been good times and lotsa fun for the most part since then!

can't remember how i actually got here but just dropped in and started posting. some of the old razings for newbies used to be really brutal. if shiva 69 is still around ask about his intro time.

how many still remember the pokey-mon board?

I found the JJ early on, but missed the HAMB. I was hanging out at the old Classic Cars Flathead board until it vanished. I then went over to the MSN and Fordbarn flathead sites. It was on Fordbarn that 286Merc mentioned the HAMB. I came over and checked it out. I lurked for a couple of months and was hooked by Ol' Rusty, the Rocky 33, Eyeball's T, Rogues rpu, and a few other projects that were coming together on the HAMB at the time.

I also got a kick out of the Redondo Rodder / Spank drama. They both contributed some good stuff when they weren't flinging shit.

I finally did an intro and actually got welcomed by Germ. I said that I had been telling my wife about the "Shitboxes(TM)" on the HAMB and from down the hall my son (then 2 years old) comes running in saying "Shitbox, Shitbox, Shitbox..." Germ threatened to send his goons to collect royalties from my son on the use of the TM.

The HAMB has really got me going on my rpu project. I had been collecting parts to build an early Ford hot rod since high school, but didn't think I could afford to build it yet. With the help and parts from friends I have met here, my pile of parts may actually see the road this year...at a price I can afford.

Viva la HAMB.

I actually found it through the JJ on the old version but never paid much attention to the HAMB. In fact, one of the cars in the readers rides section has that red 59 Impala convertible. A 40's Stewart Warner oil pressure gauge brought me here a little over 4 years ago. I needed a convex lens and bezel for the gauge. A search dumped me on the old classified page (where I found someone who fixed me up.) I put my car on the snap shots page (with a nice caption from Ryan). I kept coming back to check the new photos and finally found the HAMB. I'm not much on reading editorials. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I never did an intro either.

Very first day I got my very first computer.....typed in "Hot Rod" and it took me to Hot Rod Deluxe magazine. Followed a link to Jalopy Journal and it took me to the HAMB. The end.

Wife bought a iMac the day they went on sale.
She "forced" me to learn how to turn the friggin thing on and how to bring up email so she could give me honey do's from work. (just kidding, mostly.) I fiddled with it a couple days and then asked her where something I heard about called "search" was. Seems the mac has this thing called Sherlock, (as in Sherlock Holmes) that searches every search engine available at once and bings up tons of stuff.
So I two finger in "Hot Rod" and get a hundred and twenty three porn sites and the RRT The HAMB and The JJ.
So I go visit them, and the RRT and HAMB too. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I looked in at the HAMB and that day there was a few guys verbally goosing each other and playing cyber stink finger so I read the amusement typed out by what I percieved as a handful of punk BFer's and continued on to the next one which was the RRT and it had some neat threads going on and it was easy even for me to sign up so I did, and I actually introduced myself and within a few minutes I was welcomed to the RRT by DRD57 and Carps.
Well I hug out there for a few weeks while lurking at the HAMB and noticed a few common names between the two sites and in between the cyber fudge packing there was actually some intelligent hotrod talk going on at the HAMB, so one day when I felt particularly "sharp tongued" I signed up at the HAMB and did an intro of sorts and got some shit from a couple of people, nothing serious, just stuff like I might say for fun like; "Your mother made me throw up!"
No, no one said that to me, I say that to people occasionally when "Did your parent's have any children that lived?" goes over someone's head.
Well, I stuck around both places till Samiyam started the WWW's thread message board war and "Bill" thought it was all my fault and ceremoniously put my soul in a shoe box in his closet shortly after the RRT plug got pulled.
(By the way, did Bill ever move to Sho-Low AZ?)
I think the first HAMBers I met in person were Aaron and Shag and Killer.
I actually met and talked to then RRT'er DRD57 at Giovanni's Thursday Cruise before I ever got on the internet, but it took a while to put the two together. I was contemplating the draw backs of a cowl tank and down draft carburetion and asked him how he had his set up, if I recall. (His Model A has always been a neat car through all of it's changes.)

And so far I haven't pissed Ryan off enough to get kicked off.

I learned about the HAMB on an antique car site run by the Vintage Chevrolet Club of America (VCCA). There was a thread about how dangerous hot rods were and how crappy they're built with had a link to a thread on the HAMB.. The thread was the one about the Heidt's cracked front crossmember. I lurked for a while and felt a lot more at home here, than I did at the VCCA site, so here I'll stay http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I heard about it during the first RRT meltdown when, I believe it was FatCat had just started his board.

Wild Bill is gayly pulling his pud on SRS these days. Man, that site has gone downhill since I signed off about 18 months ago. Looked at it the other day.

The first HAMB was a newsgroup/e-mail list which is what we had before actual web applications allowed us to build message boards. Junebug from the Dirty Shirt Company, Tadpole, and Jerry (maybe shag and Christian?) kept harping on me to do a message board just to clean their email boxes up a bit. I went ahead and setup one of those free crapy boards and created a private room for 5 or 6 of us... Eventually, we made it public and the rest is history.

Ironically, no one wanted anything to do with us til traditional cars got popular... Rodder's Journal, HRD, and a few other publications came out and the thing just took off.

Eventually, traditional cars will go out of style again... Will be very interesting to see what happens to the HAMB when that happens. Prolly just me and Mike Bishop bitching at each other!!!

As best as I can remember it was the RRT/HAMB war that brought my attention to the site. I never really understood much about the flame war because I do not read much of that stuff but I was glad it brought me to the HAMB.

I like to meet the people from the HAMB in person but I often fail to spend the time to really get to know them and I regret that later. I will try to do better this season.

I found it while looking through car sites... it may have been TSR.

I really dug JJ, as it was a really well designed site, far above 90% of the rest of the web. I started checking out the forums just for the hell of it, and was impressed by how rowdy and loose it was... everyone cussing as much as they wanted, chewing on each other, but seemingly in fun. Different than other boards I went to.

That was a while back, probably early 99? It was a couple of board re-designs back. I lurked on and off, never really posting. The first time I did was during the RRT/HAMB wars, and it was getting in a piss contest with germ. Got the shake down from him when I first really started coming around two years ago (intro po-lice!). Good fellow, but hyper because of the cheap mexican crack I believe.

It was pretty friggin surreal when the RRT/HAMB thing started, because I was lurking both boards at the same time, and here they were getting intertwined... pretty strange!

Anyhow, I really dig this site, it's entertaining and informative both... rare combanation on the web these days...

Damned if I know. I got on the Jalopy Journal the first month it was up. Like Ryan said, it took a while before the internet improvements sorted out all the e-mail lists into useable message boards. I think it might have been Dave at Roadsters.com or maybe Rumpsville that got me to check out the H.A.M.B. part of Jalopy Journal the first time. I came back this last time because CWORD and Southfork recommended it.

I frequented the FE Forum on Network54 for awhile and when Anthony (moderator of that forum) mentioned the HAMB I checked it out. Wasn't too thrilled with the content at first but stuck around and eventually realized that it was mostly good natured ribbing. Mostly. Also, I didn't put together JJ and HAMB until after I'd joined.

I hate to admit it but it wasn't until after I started up here that I decided to do an older style custom with the Galaxie. Hell, I think my plans then were to drop in a 460/six speed and moderize everything about the car. Kinda glad I didn't. Even if I haven't done squat with it anyway. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Of course, I've always liked old hotrods.

I got turned on to the RRT in the later 90's by Rodder's Digest.

When the first issue of Hot Rod Deluxe came out... some dude named Ryan wrote a nice little article about Wide White Walls... an being the cocky S.O.B. that I am... I wrote a little ditty on the RRT and basically passed judgement on this poor guy that I didn't even know (what's new eh?).

Anywho, Dr.J... who I think was a double agent back then... was working on something for Aaron Lasky for HRD... so next thing you know... Guys from the HAMB are coming over to the RRT and raising hell... the shit went back and forth for a good while. I think Bill was the only guy who took it really hard. Ryan and Aaron sent me an e-mail... and the three of us had a virtual three-some going on... apologizing and realizing we're into the same shit... and then we left it at that.

So finally, I got the balls up enough to come on over here to the HAMB... only I didn't post under my "Dr.J appointed name" SamIyam... I posted under Joe Doakes... Mike Bishop had written a story about this guy named Joe Dokes... and that "everybody know's Joe Dokes" or something like that... so I thought it was funny that I was posting on the HAMB... and that "everybody know's Joe Doakes" (me)... hahaha...

Then I answered a few questions... lurked as ol' Joe... and then finally logged on as myself.

Sam.

I found this place via the link from the Kustoms by TSR site. I also still have my Kustoms by TSR t-shirt and decals, one unused, one on my F1 and one on my Impala.

I've been here long enough to have my real name as my handle (same with jerry and Glen). Those were the "punk rock" "wild west" days of the HAMB. There certainly was a lot of slapped ass nonsense going on, but usually very entertaining nonsense, and the newbie hazing was brutal. Through it all, there has always been good comraderie and plenty of good information exchanged. I still consider myself a member of H.A.C.K. (hokey ass car klub).

Because of this place, I have had a lot of fun, learned a whole lot and I've met a bunch of really good folks from all over the world. Pretty bitchin' stuff.

But I didn't stumble into the HAMB until a Friday afternoon (07/26/02) right before I left for home. I posted "Cool Site", and said I was really digging this message board. Then went home. Not good. When I first bought my '30 Model A, about this time last year... It's a sad story.

I figured...this will be my first major complete restoration, I'll do everything on this car with the help of nobody.

About a week after tinkering with my pile of rust, I said...Man It'd sure look cool slammed on the ground with whitewalls, chopped top, no fenders. So i started poking around the net looking for pics. All I could find was prettied up billet queens. I liked the cars, they are clean and nice, just not my style. I wanted to see pics of what I wanted my car to look like. After looking for a few days I stumbled across The Jalopy Journal. I never looked at the HAMB, but I was mesmerized by the look of the cars in the writeups on TJJ. I finally clicked the HAMB link and flipped out. I joined about 30 minutes later after realizing this group of garage monkeys were into the same shit as me. I've been back everyday since, and spend most of my online time poking around the HAMB forums. I'd rather see these homebuilt beaters with parts & rust falling off at 110mph than see any car in a magazine. The HAMB is FILLED with pictures that only fuel the hunger to take things one step further with our cars. Its an addiction, and I need help...I look the the HAMB for that help.

I was doing some stripes on a guys purple 33 Ford(actually outlining Bill Roell style flames with Slime Green)and we got to talking about computers and he mentioned the RRT and the HAMB.
I tried but couldn't find the RRT but did get into the HAMB.Checked it out for awhile before posting anything and got a mild rebuke from the intro police(I think they were a fringe element at the time).Started from square one and have been enjoying the board ever since.Have met some truly great people in person as well as over the electronic stream and look forward to meeting even more in the future.

I was basically lurking at RRT and a few other places but I just didn't fit in (in my own mind). RRT was a great place to learn how to do the stuff that the mags would rarely show you how to do, without trying to sell you something. It seemed kinda stuffy and I didn't feel any connection with anyone over there, so I never signed up (sorry JustSteve).

Anywho, once I was surfing and bumped into the Jalopy Journal and it was like electricity was running through me. THESE are the cars for me and this site defined what I was into. Soon the HRD and the TRJ were out and they just felt right. I saw the HAMB but I didn't dig it. the people were assholes and they ripped into everyone that joined without thier permission. I wasn't looking for a chat room anyways, I was just looking for inspiration (the artist in me I guess). I kept looking in on the HAMB anyway, and eventually I figured out that these guys weren't posers, they were the real deal and so I jumped on. I made a good long intro, no real fuss, and here we are.

I wasn't (am not) an OG here by any means but I do remember when the Jalopy Journal pages were new, and the '98 Paso pics were hot off the press......I don't know how I went so long before I finally joined the ranks of the HAMB. Musta been a professional lurker.

I found the HAMB through the RRT too.

I think the RRT is more "Formal" than "Stuffy", but I can see your point. The age ratio over there leans more towards "Old Farts", who do not appreciate the fine Arts of Shit Stirring and Humorous Insults http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif. They all seem to be pretty good people though and they can answer just about any Rodding question you can come up with.

Well it was nov 2002. I was watching "Hip" lurk around. I said why don't you sign up? He said "I'm scared...". I went home and signed up as satinblack58, not knowing what to expect, just knew that it was car related and I wanted in. Made my first post, got slammed, had a few choice words!, fixed my mistakes(the usual). And the rest as you say is history. Oh by the way hip http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif finally came out of his shell a few months later. Satiny

Samiyam started the WWW's thread message board war and "Bill" thought it was all my fault and ceremoniously put my soul in a shoe box in his closet shortly after the RRT plug got pulled.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think I got some of the blame there too. Funny how nobody saw it coming despite all the messages from Corey that he wasn;'t interested and had no money to keep it going. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I actually met and talked to then RRT'er DRD57 at Giovanni's Thursday Cruise before I ever got on the internet, but it took a while to put the two together. I was contemplating the draw backs of a cowl tank and down draft carburetion and asked him how he had his set up, if I recall.

[/ QUOTE ] And if ya had a little more patience, you could have met little ole me too, but instead you just tried to run me down with your truck! Fortunately I have the evidence on videotape. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Eventually, we made it public and the rest is history.

Which is where I stumled upon it and lurked for a while until I felt it was OK to post something, to which a loverly young lass told me to go outside into the garden and play go merry go fork yourself, I still can't find the rules to that game.

Ironically, no one wanted anything to do with us til traditional cars got popular...

[/ QUOTE ]

Guess that explains why nobody used to talk to me, I always seem to like mthe unpopular stuff.

[ QUOTE ]
Eventually, traditional cars will go out of style again... Will be very interesting to see what happens to the HAMB when that happens. Prolly just me and Mike Bishop bitching at each other!!!

Saw the rod's that Rocky built across the street from my grandparents. Soon thereafter, met Rocky who recognized my fascination with cool old stuff and sold me one of his creations. Told me to go to the HAMB,,,,,and I do what Rocky says http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I did a google search on "Fad T." No, seriously!

About 7 google pages down, there was this HAMB thing that kept re-ocurring. I thought it was some processed-food thing. You know, like KRAB. I got hungry after a while and clicked it. Lurked until I had a few model A chassis parts to post a pic of as a half assed intro. Everyone went real light on my intro, I feel cheated to this day! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

...damn, its slow at work this morning, can't beleive I read all that shit... !

My good friend "Sancho"! He gave me a Jalopy Journal t-shirt that wouldn't fit him and told me about HAMB. Lurked a long time and then signed up.
