This is, as you know, a hood spring. Nicley extended by the penny between each coil method as pirated from the H.A.M.B. Problem is my CRS, can't remember which end is up, the long end or the short end. Damm this getting old sucks.

Let's just say you had a friend, who was stupid enough not to use the spacer trick so nicely displayed by Bob. How would I, (I mean he) go about gettin those puppys back on?
Looks like you have your answer, hope you don't mind I steal your post!

That's easy Leadfoot, just tell your friend this.
If your (oops I mean His) springs are off, just bend and stick one penny at a time on each side, I did it by putting the hook in a vise on the short end to hold it steady. Using the short end lets you get the advantage of the leverage of the long end.
It gets a little tricky towards the end but it is doabale. The real trick was getting them spread open to powder coat so that the inside and between the coils got coated.
I used a heavy duty ratcheting carpenters clamp, one of those pistol grip things to spread it and then when it was extended I took a piece of 3/4 inch bar stock about 1/4 inch shorter than the extended spring and put a little notch in each end to make sure the hook stayed on the end of the bar stock. I then inserted the barstock into the center of the spring and relaxed the bar clamp till the hooks were set into the notches. The spring was spread enough to allow the powder coating to adhere to all surfaces.
Was gonna leave it in there for installation but didn't think I would be able to ge it out beyond the hinge attachment or especially the bottom where it is very close to the firewall.
I'll see if I have some pics but I don't remember taking any. Course with my memory lately I'll prolly find some I had forgotten about.
If that ain't clear email me and I'll give you my phone #
