Looking to buy an HVLP gun, to begin with I am a novice and new to painting, so going out and buying a Sata or even a DeVILBISS is not in my budget, though DeVilbiss is close, been looking on ebay, what are other generic brands to look for? I have read many use the cheapos to spray primers and such and expensive guns to shoot candies etc. Anyone use a Cal-Hawk....that seems to be a popular cheap ebay brand..thanks

Is that the 68.00 dollar one? I have been leaning that way also...., but isn't that a generic one too?

I got a Campbell Hausfeld HVLP one from Wal-Mart and it works pretty good for shooting DP90. I have not shot paint with it yet, but I suspect it won't be too bad. Worth a look. Most of the time you can use it and if it sucks just clean it up and take it back with your reciept, you have 90 days or so.

i use the $68 purple harbor freight one for primer, and occasionally for base coats. Cant go wrong for the price... got mine on sale for like $50. Good starter gun.
ive also got a Sharpe T1-CG that i got from spraygunworld.com ...$184, with a 1.4 nozzle.
non-hvlp, i LOVE this gun. Part # SHP4214.
Cant say enough good things about it...
Sprays anything, makes me look like i almost know what im doing...

I got a cheapie from JC Whitnay, probably the same as the harbor freight. I have nothing to compare it to, but I like it. Remember, even a cheapie is better than what guys usd to use. Isn't Watson the one who started out using a pump bug sprayer?

i just picked up one of the cheap harbour freight guns to. they are on sale for 49.97 here at the store i go to thru the end of the month or so. 22nd i think. good cheap gun. i've used alot of stuff and usually don't pay to much attention to how much it cost. if i spend money on anything but cheapies its usually binks because i started using binks from the beginning and i know them pretty well. i do however want to try a sata i just don't want to spend the money on one right now. i do need to buy a new good quality gun i just have to much going on right now to drop that kind of money. had considered a sharpe also as i know alot of people like 'em. one of the hambers i think sells those cal hawk guns and speaks highly of them as a good cheap gun for primer and such. am i wrong when i think it could be 286merc(hope thats right)...ken....

Seems that the Cal Hawk at $40 on Epay that comes with 1.4 and 2.0 tips runs circles around the one at HF with only a single tip at $50-60.
Just my opinion, what do I know; I just use them. They are a Sata clone as is the smaller touch up version.

I bought one on sale for $49, I spray everything from gelcoat to clearcoat with it. I've got a top of the line DeVilbiss Millenium but haven't used it yet (saving it for the big job), the purple beast works great and I don't care if it breaks, for the price I'll buy another....

I have the green one from Harbor Freight. I was told by the PPG reps that more pro shops than you know use em.

"comes with 1.4 and 2.0 tips"
what is the difference between tips, cal hawk comes with 2 which in itself is good deal, tips themselves can add up if you buy seperately....

Hey Y`all
I don`t know if you guys have a Sams wholesale club near but
Yesterday I was there and they have a 2 gun DeVilbiss set for $84 .Comes with a large gun and a detail gun .
Both guns have 2 size tips also.
I never used a gravity gun.
I learned and still use my siphon feed DeVilbiss and Binks.
So I thought it was a good deal.
I dont know about what tip size would be good for primer and what is good for flake.
Maybe somebody can set me straight.

Harbor freight sells a nice little gun cheap.
Lesabre59 has painted several cars with one and the results are amazing. You would never believe the work wasn't done in a booth with a high dollar gun.

CREASE, thanks for the compliment.
Actually I use the cheapest gun Harbor Freight sells, is usually on sale for around $14, I shot primer, color and Clear ALL with the same gun, then i shot thes red ghost flames and clear with it. Its not really the gun its the PREP work your willing to do and the color sanding and buffing afterward. Far from perfect but good enough to fool most people http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Oh yea, and most important, stick with one system whether it be Dupont, PPG, whatever.
Believe it or not i've had the deepest results with NASON, over PPG and DUPONT CHROMABASE. and about 1/3 he price

Thanks guys, actually isn't Nason a DuPont product?

Yes, NASON is the "generic" brand for Dupont, and it is labeled as a Dupont product but much cheaper. Ive shot NASON over Dupont Chroma Base (base Clear) and Chroma One (single stage) and its worked fine. Ive even shot it over Acrylic Enamel as long as you catalysed the Acrylic Enamel, perferably with a hardener

If you wanna go one step up from the Harbor Freight gun you can get a Sharpe Cobalt or a Devilbiss Finishline II. Both run about $125. A good message board for autobody/paint questions is:
