Pinewood derby time again!!!!

Well its that time of year for my sons cubscout pack again. Pinewood derby races!!!

This year there will be prizes for show and go. Anyone out there have pictures of their or their sons pinewood rides? We are looking for show and go ideas this year.

my cars always turned out to be wedge shaped.

please dont de a deuche, please let him build it all by himself...(dont mean to offend here, just have seen too much of dads taking control. also dont take it too seriously. it takes all the fun away from it.)

Our Church has the AWANA Grand Prix, in which the kids use Cub Scout P.W. derby kits.
Here's my daughter with the car she built (minimal help from me). Check out the headlights- brass washers- which she polished with wenol. She also picked out the colors; pink w/purple polka-dots and painted it herself.

I built mine...about 20 years ago...took the kit, cut out the body according to the pattern in the kit, (very boxy), used powdered graphite on the "axels", and three lead weights (actually, drywall screw anchors) sunk into the nose...

and won first place. The dads who wind-tunnel tested their son's cars at Ford were in awe...

This is my sons car not mine. This is our third year and I am very insistant on making it his car his ideas. We are however looking for ideas. I have seen too many over zealous fathers on race day not letting their sons even touch the cars. This is the kids day but just like we buildld our Kustoms and rods in the garage - He takes pride in the looks of the derby car.

When I was growing up, my old man "helped" me make my Pinewood Derby car. It wasy WAY more elaborate than a kid could have come up with, on their own (metal flake paint job, lead weights, graphite on the axles, etc.).

When it was all said and done, my car was beat by a damned unpainted, unsanded, wedge of wood, that some kid knocked 4 wheels onto (obviously without the help of an overzealous parent). http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Boy I wish I could find mine. My first one looked like a Super Bird convertable with a TransAm spoiler. My second was a like a 72 Corvette convertable and the last one was the normal wedge. #1 got 1st, #2 got 2nd and #3 got honorable mention.

Here's my old official Cub Scout Pinewood Derby winner...

Actually, now that I think about it, this was from 1977...not 79!

Yep, we just went with the boring wedge shape with a wad of lead weight placed directly in the center, bringing this beast to the scale at just a pinch under the legal weight (5 ounces if I recall correctly). The Tech Inspectors allowed it, and it cleaned house! It beat all entries for that year, and even the Scoutmaster's previously undefeted car...which was a nearly identical wedge, but painted dark red!

My car was green 'cause I liked Godzilla...and it carried the number 9 on the nose 'cause that's how old I was at the time! The "Strip Blazer" decals came from a generic sheet.

I gotta see if I can find mine(I mean my dads) It was pretty cool and fast too untill some other kit ripped it out of my hands and bent the axels. It looke kinda like a Caparell(SP) body. it even had fenders.

I never placed lower that 3rd, and had a few First's. Most of mine ended up being wedges, with the weight in the middle. I had almost no help from Dad either. Now that I think about it, most of my cars were flat black with flames, even though I don't ever recall seeing a car painted that way. It was the late 80's though.

I don't know where mine are from way back, but I was undefeated 3yrs running in my pack (about 250 cars) &amp; always placed in top 3 at district. I built the cars, but dad helped with weight placement &amp; helped make sure the axles (nails!) were straight &amp; square (one of the tricks I think). We used a heavy number stamp inlaid in the bottom of the car with epoxy for the primary weight then adjusted with thumb-tack headlights/taillights to get it spot on the weight (5oz?). Lots of powdered graphite &amp; polished axles. I think the combination of polished axles, powdered graphite, super square axles &amp; low centered weight really helped. I was actually banned my last year at pack level because I had played little league football &amp; missed a lot of meetings, so they said I wasn't "active" enough. They just wanted someone else to have a chance! My cars were never fancy, but always fast! Some things haven't changed too much...

Mine were never fast (though I did get 3rd on year in my pack) but they looked cool (to me!). My pack let the dad's have a competition too, and my dad made a few...they are unbelievably badass looking! I'll take some pics and post them tomorrow.

My dad did this one...it's SWEET. He hollowed out the middle and use little nuts for weight. One of the wheels broke off.

We decided to do old sprint style cars together my last year (the only reason I stayed in the scouts). Dad's is the yellow, mine is the red.

you might want to check the rule book before trying this one but i saw a guy when i was a kid shave the width of the wheels down to almost nothin to reduce resistance. he also used the powdered graphite on the axles. it was wicked fast. he was one of the adults and just built it for fun so he did'nt compete with the kids in the real competition. just the fun runs aferwards. seems like he might have used smaller diameter axles too. it was all about reducing friction and resistance. i think it was bullet shaped too.

i seem to remember that if you tweak a wheel so that the car only has three wheels touching, it makes a big difference.

Just found this request for Pinewood rides, this car ran undefeated in 2002. My son and I were really proud of it. This is our last car due to the fact he lost interest in scouts, darn it.

Here is the 2001 undefeated car it was only beaten by the 2002 car. I have pictures of the other cars that both sons and I made but they were just the wedge type cars. In all we won first place twice, second place twice, best design a few times. The pinewood derby was great fun and a really good thing to share with your sons.
