View Full Version : HAMB CALENDER: Time to stop screwing around...

Django

Ok, I need to know who wants a calendar and how many you want. I've been getting prices but I haven't heard from the "comittee"... Ryan, Big A, Fuel Pump... I still want this to happen, and I don't want to be the one to handle all the money, shipping, etc, etc. but if I have to, then I'll try to figure it all out. No one is going to print this without payment first. And I don't have the cash to front the bill. So before we take money, who is SERIOUS?

I for one would be interested, did we get and idea of a final cost (remember double it for the kiwi peso) ? I guess we can prolly lump the kiwi's together and post them to one of us for distribution.

One or two.

Of course you could wait for the fabulous Lowe's Motor Speedway PPG Nationals Goodguys Rod Run Calendar (not endorsed by Goodguys, Lowes or PPG) that the Saints did last year. It should be out the morning of October 26, depending on our hangovers. A classic, I might add.

count me in for 1... maybe 2. an estimated price would help

Django
09-11-2003, 05:51 PM
The last time we were discussing it, I think we agreed on $15. The best price was approximately $2800 but that was having them pad bound, like a note pad. I'm more inclined to go with some of the quotes Roger got me, which was the $3700-$5000 range for 1000 calendars.

That price doens't take into account any shipping costs.

Going on the high side with the $5000 quote, and allowing $8 for shipping per calendar, and the average order will be 2 calendars, that comes out to selling 263 calendars before this can come to fruition. I'm not a mathematician though, so tell me if that ain't right.

Two of them here and I can pay in advance to get the ball rolling and so everything does not have to come out of your pocket. I know that I do not have $2800 laying around. Also did anyone "HAMBers" own a printing shop? To help you out on the price. Just wondering. Also what does the turn around look like on getting them printed? January is only a couple of months away. Sorry for so many questions, but I have not been following the posts on the calender's.

You are way high on the shipping though. You can mail up to 3 lbs in one of those USPS soft bag mailers thingys for $3.95. Could probley get at least 4 or 5 in there for that price. Of course higher for CN, NZ, and Downunder http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Django
09-11-2003, 06:48 PM
Obviously if you order 2, the shipping will not be $8 x 2. I don't think I made that very clear after re-reading it again.

Turn around looks to be 5-7 days after payment. I am still inclined to not sacrifice the quality of the piece to save money at this point. So the cost to print as it stands right now is $5151, excluding shipping to whomever steps up to handle distribution.

If we can't get 263 calendars sold in a pre-sale, then I think I will have to break down and drink myself stupid. Keep in mind, that leaves 700+ calendars that will be pure profit for the HAMB. You do the math...

Denise, I'm just guessing on shipping. But they need to be mailed flat and packaged such that they dont' get ruined in the process. We have to buy some kind of envelope as well. With the monies generated, I guess we could afford it if the actual cost of shipping is slightly more than the paid for costs. I've never shipped anything/figured costs on this kind of scale before.

Just so you know, those 263 calendars ALL have to be pre-paid for this to fly. There is no other way. If we only can sell 264 of the 1000 calendars, then Ryan gets $15. If we only can get 262 pre paid orders, then the project is dead.

I'm in for at least two.

Denise is right about that mailer thingy. It would of course depend on the overall size of the calendar but those envelopes are sturdy cardboard and are free from the post office. That would cut costs dramatically as you will not have to buy envelopes and shipping will stay below 4 dollars. This will be true even more if the calendars are of such a size that you can get two or three in the envelope.

If I can help out anymore than I already have just let me know.

I think the problem is...

How is Django (or whoever is in charge) going to collect pre-paid money, keep track of it, order calendars from the printer, pay the shipping from the printer to the house, buy the envelopes, package the calendar, print labels or hand write address labels, ship the calendars etc etc

and then continue to send more and more calendars after that.

Its a ton of work for one dude.

I tell you right know.. i know Django.. he aint got the time.

The HAMB T shirts that were done by Mikey was great, but i think maybe mikey might have a sort of business that does that.

What we need is someone who has an existing mail order/calendar/book/magazine business that can incorporate the calendar into their stock or magazine sales.

Instead of printing the calendar and distributing it ourselves maybe we can convince a "calendar company" to do it for us and just pay the HAMB for the right to use the images copy and design.. a licensing fee.

or maybe we scrap the whole paper calendar idea for now untill we get the issues worked out and release a 2004 electronic version. Monthly desktop downloads in different sizes.. a big picture every month you can put on you pc/mac desktop.. a picture of the calendars month. Or maybe even a HAMB calendar screen saver that just flips through the months. maybe people would like it so much they would donate money to a Pay Pal account Ryan would set up for funding the HAMB.. that way people can just throw a couple bucks in the kitty when they download.

Maybe we should do the electronic version for 2004 and try a printed version for 2005.

Just my two cents..(which in canadian i hear is worth a bunch)

The math..................

$5151 divided by $15 is 343 calendars

if shipping is around $5.00, then you must sell about 515 calendars before you start making a profit, or make it $15 a calendar plus $5 for shipping, then you have to sell 343 calendars before you start making a profit.

It would be $15 + $5. I don't think it would go up for 2. Larger orders will have to pay more.

Like Magnet said, this is a pretty overwhelming task for me. And time is not something I have loads of. I think the distribution will take some kind of team effort. I sure know I can't do it alone. It's taken me long enough just to pull all the artwork together, get releases, make the final art. When did we start this? Last NOVEMBER?

We'll also have to sell about 13 pieces over, to cover shipping from printer to distribution point. And actually, we will probably have to sell 20 above THAT to build up a kitty and have funds to start shipping orders...

IF I recall correctly, it was Fuel Pump's idea. I was a newbie at the time. But I whipped up a quick concept and the rest is history.

What do you guys think? Shipped flat or in the USPS 3 sided box?

Envelopes (http://www.uline.com/ProductDetail.asp?model=S-6692&ref=1656) to mail flat. If we order 400 envelopes (with 500 calendars) that comes out to 80¢ per calendar approximately. I'm getting samples. When I do, I'll take it to the post office and see what the bulk rate is.

Need 3 or 4. I might be able to help sell a little. I have a few street rod shops I sell to that I know I could get to buy a couple... especially if its before Xmas. I'm sure I could unload another 25 or 30. Unless we are trying to keep this in the HAMB family?

Let me know if I can help.

Hey, I've got a question: As I'm writing this, this post has 789 views and 152 replies saying "I'd like a calendar or two."

So who are the 637 HAMBers who read this post and weren't willing to cough up 15 bones for quite possibly the coolest hot rod calendar ever?! Don't make me come over there! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Seriously, is there a PayPal site set up for this yet? If not, you need help with one?

Dammit Bill...you'd better get one...I wrote the captions/copy for several of those images!!! I'd even autograph it!

And I don't think Django has a paypal set up yet...he'll be back on here on Monday...hopefully he'll read this and get it taken care of!

True, but we're probably still talking about at least a hundred or two window shoppers...Did I mention how cool this calendar is? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
