1956 CAR-toon: Your Safety First
While posting the Jetaway cartoon, I also came across this safety film also produced by John Sutherland. ‘Your Safety First’ was a 1956 promotional film made for Automobile Manufacturers of America. Set in the “far off” year 2000, we see their cool inventions like the dinner table cleaner, virtual reality TV, and the “desktop” computer…
The whole set up is to get a glimpse back through the development of the automobile and explain the safety additions added over time. I find it amusing how they leave out seat belts and padded dashes, which were items well known to lessen injuries by the mid 50s. Ironically, the automobile manufacturers were reluctant to put seat belts in cars because they feared the message to the public would be that cars were unsafe!
