Straighten Up & Fly Right

Straighten Up & Fly Right

As Silva and I got out of my little a-coupe, we were greeted by a P-51 Mustang roaring through the sky at less than 400 feet. Once passed, the fighter put its nose up and banked hard away from us. The resulting profile against the bluest of Texas skies was nothing less than breathtaking.

A whole crew of us showed up at a vintage air force base in San Marcos, TX to help the CAF celebrate the 65th anniversary of Doolittle’s Raid. It’s one of those deals that just kind of falls together and ends up being the best car day of the year. There were 20 or so vintage aircraft and a handful of traditional hot rods sharing the tarmac… It was a low-key deal for sure. Most of the day was spent bullshitting with buddies, stealing ideas (and in one case, an actual ride!) from our air born brothers, and just generally enjoying the amazing weather.

As the day wrapped up, El Jefe and I decided to get our cars together for an impromptu photo shoot using a P-51 and an A-T6 as a backdrop. Once we got the scene set and the folks out of frame, it was a pretty magical setting and one you don’t stumble upon too often. The resulting photos are something I’ll have forever. Here’s a quick taste:

Thanks go out to Steve, Brian, and the boys for letting me tag along and Kevin for keeping me company…
