The Car Clubs Of Sepulveda Blvd.

The Car Clubs Of Sepulveda Blvd.

In the mid-1950’s some hot rod hoodlum got an idea while driving down Sepulveda Blvd. between the San Fernando Valley and the coast line. He saw an open cliff, but to him it looked like a blank canvas. Repercussions be damned, our hoodlum waited for night fall and then returned to the cliff with a can of paint and maybe a ladder and some rope. Carefully, he scaled the face of the rock and found the perfect location to paint his car club’s plaque.

The next morning, our hood’s art work gleamed in the fresh sunlight and proved to all passers that this young man’s club was tops. Not to be outdone, another young man grabbed his own paint, his own rock climbing tools, and painted his club’s plaque on the cliff as well. And then another… And then yet another… In no time, the cliff was wallpapered with plaques from clubs such as the Igniters, Valley Cruisers, Black Rats, and Kreepers. The legend goes that even the fabled Knowbody’s traveled all the way from Knowhere to paint their own plaque on the legendary cliff as well.

I’ve heard stories of “The Cliff” for years and have even seen a photo or two. Yesterday, I found some of the best shots I’ve seen of the location and thought I would post them. I wonder if any of our So-Cal members can educate us on what happened to the rock. While we sure don’t promote vandalism here at The Jalopy Journal, we do think it would be a shame if this cliff remained… in a natural state.
