Experimental Corvette SS

Experimental Corvette SS

Last night I was laying in bed with the T.V. on and using the sounds of a cheesy old Elvis movie to put me to sleep. I don’t even know which movie it was… Some bad musical. Just as I was about to nod off and just as the movie was coming to a close, I heard the over produced sounds of a V8 over Elvis’ voice. I opened my eyes just long enough to see Elvis pull from a stop light in what looked like a radically redesigned Corvette. I knew the car, but I couldn’t place it. I fell asleep anyhow.

This morning it dawned on me – that was the Corvette SS that Hot Rod Magazine featured in 1957. I quickly fired up the computer and started researching the car as I’ve never really paid it much attention. Something about seeing it in motion with Elvis at the wheel made me want to learn more. I didn’t make it far in my Google search before I found a GM educational video on YouTube. It completely satisfied my curiosity.

The car is awkward in it’s beauty and I’m sure it never amounted to much, but there is something incredibly fascinating about literally watching what a limitless budget could do in the mid to late 1950’s. It’s fantastic.
