Colorized, Staged, and Mysterious

So the photo above (and seen full-sized below) has been sitting on my hard drive for over ten years. I seem to always find it when researching for something else entirely, but I always stop and admire the composition. Embarrassingly enough, however, I have no idea where it came from. I figured today was as good enough a day as any to figure it out… So here you are gentlemen – who and where?
