Time for the Big Beach Weekend…

It’s the dog days of Summer, and Bonneville was a wash out again, but there is still one week long event before Labor Day that I look forward to, and it’s the big Monterey/ Laguna Seca/Pebble Beach gathering. I’ve posted before about the significance of the Concours d’Elegance in particular, and although the price of admission is high, it’s a world class gathering of cars worth seeing if you can swing it. Why is this “Grey Poupon on the Lawn” event HAMB worthy? With the influence of early Hot Rod Historians like Ken Gross and Bruce Meyer, the Concours slowly began recognizing historically significant rods and customs a number of years ago. For the 65th annual show this year, the 7 most significant Postwar Mercury Customs are being recognized for the first time. The Sam Barris ’49, Bob Hirohata ’51, and James Dean ’49 Mercs will be on display, along with a full class of their lead sled brethren, including the Wally Welch ’50, Ralph Testa ’50, Fred Lowe ’51, and Leo Lyons ’50 Mercurys. This should be good.

I’ll be on the lawn to document the happenings and report my finding back to you next week!
