The Borg – 1956

The Borg – 1956

So Randy is in town to pick up his freshly finished ’29 roadster. Before heading this way, he loaded up his Bonneville car so that Keith could get a head start on preparations for next year (more on that later). The whole package showed up at The Jalopy Journal World HQ yesterday afternoon and while Randy was busy studying his new car, I was busy digging the trailer he brought with him.

According to the manufacturer’s tag, the trailer was built by Borg Welding & Manufacturing Co. in 1956. It’s a tilt deck trailer utilizing a gas cylinder allowing you to control the speed at which the deck tilts up and back. It’s quite literally built like a brick shit house and features all kinds of cool little details – my favorite being the swing out signal lights, but there’s also a great little lone brake light as well as some killer integrated tie hooks and what not.

But what’s really interesting about this trailer is that it was built for cars with a narrow track width. The tire channels are 16″ wide and only about 4.5-feet on center. So, you aren’t gonna get a modern car or even a later 30’s era Ford on this trailer. Early 30’s era Fords fit like a glove, however… And so you would have to imagine that this trailer was purposely built in 1956 to haul hot rods.

This is the kind of thing that you can only find in Southern California fellas… So rad.

Edit: I posted a tease of this trailer last night on the H.A.M.B. and was quickly pointed to a classified ad (posted by the gentleman that Randy bought the trailer from) with more history and better imagery. You can check that out here.
