“Hot Rod” By David Perry

“Hot Rod” By David Perry

Back in 1997, the traditional hot rod “renaissance” was really just getting started. Young kids were putting grease in the hair, rolling their jeans, and living invincibly. They were also building old cars… But instead of suppositories, they were building cars based off of images they saw in old magazines and books by guys like Dean Batchelor.

All of this caught the eye of a young and very talented photographer named David Perry. Armed with a Nikon and a shit-ton of Tri-X, David did rounds of both southern and northern California (as well as Bonneville) shooting the scene with a critical eye and a rustic style. The result is a book that should really be legendary by now. Sure, everyone that was doing this thing of ours back then knows the book and knows of Perry. But I feel like a lot of the newer guys to the scene have missed out on a book that truly might be one of the most influential books of the modern traditional hot rod scene.

You can see more of Perry’s work on his website. But I’m tellin’ ya… If you don’t have this book, you need to get it. Of course, it’s no longer in print but it still pops up on eBay for reasonable money.

As for David Perry? Last I heard from him, he was on a sail boat and getting ready for a long voyage. No shit.

The crazy ones are always the best ones.
