Raising the Barn… Hot Rod Style.

You may remember a friend I wrote about named Mike V.? Well, after enjoying his ’29 A Tudor for the year he went out and nabbed a well-running stock ’31 Deluxe A Coupe. The plan now is to blow the A sedan apart, soup up the Banger, box & step the chassis and then use all these new bits to build a period hot rod with the A coupe. Mike got ahold of  his local buddies (car and non-car guys) and asked for an hour of our time on Sunday afternoon. It was a pretty simple task: Just take the Sedan body off the frame and gently set it down in the driveway- Just a task that’s easier to do with friends. The brief moment of all these random guys jumping in to help a common friend was pretty cool, and it reminded me of building my own A Roadster, now 15 years ago. The whole thing is not unlike the Amish barn-raising scene in ‘Witness’, just substitute the lemonade for beer.  The hot rod micro-community coming together for a simple chore that does nothing more than help a new guy out. Isn’t that what it’s all about? You even make some new car acquaintances in the process…
