Bonneville 1954!

Bonneville 1954!

I know I’ve probably covered a few too many Bonneville articles this month, but this last one is a winner, so indulge me. It’s Rod & Custom’s December ’54 issue, with a full ten page photo spread on the 6th annual Speed Week gathering, chronicled by the great Dean Moon and Spence Murray. It’s rare to see many ‘behind the scenes’ photos of Bonneville in this era, with a shot of Otto Crocker setting up timing equipment and many SCTA members prepping the course. By 1954 the Hemi-powered racers were setting serious speed records, and new designs like the Johansen twin-tank streamliner, alloy bodied sport cars and many mid and rear-engined specials premiered that year. Ironically, heavy rains came through Western Utah and cut the racing week short. If you could go back in time to this Bonneville meet (almost exactly 60 years ago), which car would you want to see in person? Which one would you like to pilot down the salt?

(Apologies the last 1/2 page of the article was left off)
