The Dick Williams Roadster

The Dick Williams Roadster

Last night, I was brainstorming with a friend of mine. I couldn’t think of a worthwhile post for today and he was helping me out by coming up with questions to rattle my noodle. One of those was a simple one and one I can’t believe I haven’t asked myself before:

What is the most overlooked historical roadster ever built?

I knew my answer almost immediately. It’s the Dick Williams roadster.

Here’s a car that actually won the AMBR award in 1953, but even so, always seemed to be the bride’s maid. Hell, it’s biggest magazine feature was probably the June, 1953 issue of Hop Up. And even then, it played second fiddle to the Dick Flynt roadster featured on the cover of the same issue.

My interest was so peeked, that I called Ralph Moore this morning – another old pal of mine who’s own roadster was beat out of the AMBR award by Dick’s car in 1953. I asked him what he thought and he was kind enough to provide some quotes that lend credence to my answer.

“Dick’s car was probably one of the finest built cars of the early 1950’s. As far as attention to detail and craftsmanship, the only early car that I can think of that could match it would be the Neikamp roadster. And Dick’s car was every bit as nice. I remember the car being a pretty big deal back then, but you are right in that it doesn’t seem to come up much in conversation anymore.”

Well, fuck that… I declare today to be “Dick Williams Roadster Day” from here on out. Put it in your calendars boys… March 26th.
