Another Mad CARtoonist: Pete Millar
After posting the CARtoons artwork of George Trosley I got a PM from a fellow HAMBr reminding me about another hot rod artist and co-creator of the magazine: Pete Millar. He often used the pen names ‘Arin Cee’ and ‘Millarkey’ and was actually the co-creator of CARtoons magazine in 1959, based on Millar’s idea for a complete cartoon book focused on cars. His partner quit after the first issue but Pete did four issues at home, and then worked on magazine-sized issues until the 11th, published in 1963. At this time, it was decided to take the publication in-house, and Millar was cut out of the editing job that had long been his dream. He then carried the publishing savvy into his own DRAGcartoons magazine under the ‘Millar Publications’ label, and it was successful through the end of the decade. Millar Publications also produced four issues of the popular Ed “Big Daddy Roth” Magazine. Pete passed away in 2003, and the Peteresen Auto Museum opened a retrospective of his work in the Fall of 2011.
