It’s almost Bonneville time…

That’s right boys and girls- A mere 18 days till we are officially in Speed Week (Aug. 10 -16) for the SCTA’s Bonneville Nationals in Wendover, Utah. I say this every year, but it bears repeating: If you’ve never been, I highly recommend it, and offer a few tips: Fly there if you have to, or better yet, drive there in an old car. Sleep on the edge of the salt, or in a sleazy Nevada hotel room, but get there in time to hang out in the Nugget parking lot on Friday night and watch the roadsters drive in. It’s a great “car show”. Get up early on Saturday morning to watch the beautiful Utah sunrise, get your bare toes in the salt, and then hang out for the drivers meeting. Ride a beach cruiser or a minibike through the staging area to check out the entire line up every day- Short or long course. Offer to help a small team in the pits, or just find some shade and a radio to tune in for the race announcers for run-by-run action. Get a rule book and fine an obscure class record you want to beat next year. Why not? In the end, there is no wrong way to do Bonneville. Just do it.

I leave you with a video of the flathead-powered #312c Cannarozzi /Tardel ’32 Ford roadster heading down the salt for the first run of the 2011 Nationals, piloted by the coolest mom ever, Chris Cannarozzi. Check out builder and tuner extraordinaire Keith Tardel leaning in to say “have fun”… And having fun is what it’s all about.
