1938 Ford Truck

Dan Collins is one of those guys with a good eye and a stable of cars to prove it. In fact, just about every ride I’ve seen roll out of his garage hits the mark squarely. I wasn’t surprised at all to see this ’38 Ford Truck.

A few years ago “the Rudy truck” started a trend. Take the wide and relatively cheap cabs of ’35 to ’38 Ford trucks, channel them over a massively z-ed frame, and run them sans fenders. Rudy’s truck really was a cool little hot rod with a lot of innovation, but the trend that followed never really inspired me beyond what Rudy had done. Guys started further exaggerating the lines, choosing even more massive truck cabs, even taller wheel & tire combinations, etc… Most of these follow-up efforts didn’t make it past a glorified mock-up phase. The graceful pre-war lines were lost in an effort to create something these work horses were never meant to be. Longevity is lost.

That’s what is refreshing about Dan’s ’38 truck. He didn’t try to change the essence of what it is. It’s sitting proportionally on its foundation with a solid stance and a great looking set of fenders. The massive chop is certainly over-the-top, but it fits the overall look and feeling that Dan created. And I love the fact that he kept the stock grille…
