Driving a Hot Rod on “Reality” TV

Driving a Hot Rod on “Reality” TV

Back in August I got a call from the good folks at Autoweek about their new TV show called “Vinsetta Garage”, which will air episodes on Discovery’s Velocity channel early next year. We talked about me flying to Detroit and talking about the art of customizing, which was the theme of the episode they were shooting. The plan was for me to ride around Detroit in someone’s 55 Ford and talk to their lovely host Courtney much like we were sitting in a living room (cool idea, right?). The scheduling just didn’t work out for that Motor City trip, but last week the Vinsetta Garage folks showed up in my neck of the woods, and this time I would be driving the host around in one of my own cars.

They actually chose my ratty old ’29 A Roadster, which is probably more about traditional hot rodding that customizing per se, but who was I to argue? The crew showed up with a professional monster rig equipped with a camera boom and a dolly to pull my car behind them while they shot the episode… WHA? Yeah, that’s right. They strapped my front wheels down to the trailer and I “drove” around the Bay Area while we talked about what customizing is. Let me tell you that it is slightly nerve racking to have a multi-unit Highway Patrol escort on the Bay Bridge, while your maneuvering in heavy traffic in your roadster with absolutely no control over the car, chatting with a cute model about gearhead stuff while you pretend your actually driving, being filmed by 3 high def. cameras at the same time *and* not try to sound like a total idiot.

Good times on reality TV my friends…
