They’ve been making a gradual comeback for quite a while in Europe and Japan: Real Wood Toys. Yup, pre-plastic, painted wooden play things. They are fairly light, super durable, and really, who throws wood toys away? Sure, it’s more expensive than molded plastic, but you keep em’ forever and will pass them on to your children. The best ones I’ve seen so far have a definite retro vibe, and here are a few of my current favorites that have the right amount of simple, clean design and go-fast looks. Featured roadsters are from Playsam, Brio, Fagus, Vilac, and Playforever. Unfortunately, most of these great tree-based toys are very pricey, and only available in Europe or high end/ boutique toy shops here in the States.
